Hi all,
My friend has qualifiied her horse for the Search for Star final at HOYS, and have said I will drive them up.
I am sure that plenty of you have taken ponies to HOYS - so hoping you can help provide me with some simple info which I cant find on HOYS website.
- how much are stables ? - can you sleep in lorry overnight ? - Do you have to get stable if there for just daytime ?
Any other useful hints or tips from all your HOYS veterans out there ....
Thanks !
Lexy.

Stables area about £65 - £75 per night.
You can sleep in your lorry.
I dont think you have to have a stable but not 100% sure.
If you are having a stable they are situated on a tar mac car park so a deep bed might be necessary. They can be some way away from the lorry so a wheelbarrow, I would say, is essential for carrying your equipment etc.
Take a torch.
Good luck, well done and have fun.

Hey I am looking into this too as I qualified on Sunday, the stables are 5pm until 2.30pm for £60 you can have one lorry space overnight and no you don't have to have a stable but warm up times are the night before the classes. What class has she qualfied for?
Thanks for the info on lots of bedding and wheelbarrow.

you'll need a wheelbarrow and to be fit, its blooming miles to stables then onto the arena....or does it just seem that way after all the fetching and carrying we do for our equine stars!! Welldone, Goodluck and have fun...

Well done to both of you for qualifying for Search 4 a star. Cant say I am a veteran HOYS goer, but I did win the Search 4a Star class at HOYS in 2005...... maybe i can offer a few hints. The biggest problem you will face is the working in times. You haven't said which section you have qualified in, but I know when I went the SEIB (hacks and RH) working in in the actual ring was either 9-10pm or 10-11pm (cant remember which) on wed night, then at 6-7am on the Thursday morning in the main arena. Other than that the only available working in is in the outside area which gets quite busy. I would recommend a stable the night before so that you get the chance to ride in the ring - it def gives you an edge over people who don't. You also only get passes for the day of your comp - so for me that was Thursday. That means you only have access to the Caldene Ring working in on Wed night. - this means if you want to watch the evening performance on Wed night in the main arena you will have to buy tickets! Final hint - there is only a toasty van on the stable park so if you are staying over take lorry food with you! You cant get access to the food places in the main arena unless you buy extra tickets! Most of all enjoy yourself. It really is the ride and dream of a lifetime, and whilst my little star has gone on to qualify for the open class this year, nothing will ever beat my first HOYS ride. Enjoy the moment. xxx

jdd - it was my friend who was 2nd to you in the RC horse class and also qualified on the big grey !!
Thanks all for all the info.
So the warm up in the ring is the day before ?! I was thinking of suggesting we stay the night after (since class is not till 4.55pm) and watching the M&M HOYS and other SFAS classes the next morning before heading home.
But maybe we will have to come up day before instead now ... anyway I will pass on the info to my friend and she can make her mind up. I am just the driver and groom :-)
Often she is my groom at M&M shows - so it is nice I can help her out for a change.

ECHO all of the above, generally you can stay the night before, and the night of your class. Advice... do a practise, its not like the real thing, no audience, no moving crowd, no applause, no commentary............. but, your boy gets a feel of the surface( big tip......... it sticks to tails etc. brush it out, it clogs up if you try an wash it out ) and they see the arena and decorations. Enjoy it... well done. May your issues be small ones... GOOD LUCK x

IMO caldene arena much more difficult to get horses to settle in. Bit claustrophobic and the speakers around the edge are just at horses ear height! Take them to the show tired and keep working them, it is easier to push and kick with your outside leg than be thinking i wish i had done more. Practise with ear plugs they really help. In last years s. for star at least 1 of the hunters blew it as they just got overcome.
