The young drivers scheme is for people aged 18 - 21 who want a career in lorry driving, you have to be employed by a haulage company and then they get funding from the Young Drivers Scheme. Are you thinking of taking a HGV test - over 7.5 tonnes or just an under 7.5 tonnes? You need to apply for a provisional license and you do have to be over 21. www.transportoffice.gov.ukThis link is helpful

You do NOT have to be 21 to take a category C1 licence. The age limit is 18. Just for your info Cat C1 is vehicled not exceeding 7.5t, Cat C for which you do have to be 21 is vehicles exceeding 7.5t. The young drivers scheme is purely for those employed within the haulage industry.Vehicles between 3500kg and 7500kg with a trailer up to 750kg C1 18* Combinations of vehicles where the towing vehicle is in subcategory C1 and its trailer has a MAM of over 750kg provided that the MAM of the combination thus formed does not exceed 12000kg and the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. (If you passed your category B test prior to 1.1.1997 you will be restricted to a total weight not more than 8250kg) C1+E 21*
*Age 18 if combination weight is under 7500kg Large vehicles with or without trailers Description Category Minimum age Vehicles over 3500kg with a trailer up to 750kg C 21* Vehicles over 3500kg with a trailer over 750kg C+E 21*
*Age 17 if member of armed forces *Age 18 if member of the young drivers scheme
NOTE the star next to the age on Cat C1 refers to memebers of the armed forces who may take their test at 17!
