I've been wondering about this for a while, but I think it's time the show societies separated their panels into ridden judges and conformation judges. I know there are plenty that are capable of judging both, but I think some are much more suited to one than the other. I know we are quick to "judge" the judges who don't put a pony down for a wrong leg, but how do we know that they actually know what a wrong leg is. Maybe some of them genuinely don't, but may know an awful lot when it comes to conformation. Likewise, a judge may be really good when it comes to judging performance, but not so good on conformation/breed type. Let's have a sensible discussion on this, without getting personal please.

SHB have ride and corformation judges and even seperate ladies class judges. I understand {correct me if I am wrong }SHB ride judges have to retire at a certaind age but can continue with conformation. They have to attend seminars and new judges have to have people to nominate then and they then have to attend to be judged on their skills. Once approved they are probationary judges and always judge with panel judges. If there is a probationary judge the steward always asks competitors if they mind a probationary rides as well!!!

Most of the recognised judges panels now have separate judges lists, one for conformation/in hand and one for ridden. All M&M panel judges have had to be assessed by their own societies (unless they were put on when Noah was a lad) as to their competence to judge on either panel. Most also have a retiring age (compulsory) I know the testing for NPS and BSPS is rigourous, so dont imagine for one minute that a judge on any of these panels has not had to prove that they know what theyr doing at some time, each to their own, stops it getting boring.

unless they were put on when Noah was a lad Unfortunately it often seems as if its those judges that miss the wrong legs.

i can understand the idea of having seperate judges but i would then have to sympathise with the show secretarys having both the bother of finding two judges and double the exspense....
