PLEASE READ IF YOU HAVE THE TIME!!! ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATFULLY RECIEVED! My mare has a sore mouth. Wont go into the ins and outs and why, etc.. but basically the corners of her mouth, where the bit sits, is obviously sore and sometimes even splits open slightly. She jumps as well, so for the jumping she wears a waterford. For flat schooling she wears just a mild snaffle type bit. (Sorry...had a mind blank and cant for the life of me think what it is right now!!!!) oh deary Also sometimes wears double for shp classes. So basically i am wandering of anyone else has or has had this problem it is affecting her performance as it obviously is sore, and so when i take a pull if i need to, or even have a strong contact, she quite often throws her head up (mainly in canter, or after landing from a jump) as if to say ouch get off. Have been having lessons and when landing after a jump have totally given her the contact so she has no reason to chuck her head up, which seems to be working, but i cant canter aroud with no contact! Have had the vet take a look when he came for something else, but he said it hasnt split the inside r anything so not to worry (but i am because t must hurt her and its a bloody pain to deal with when riding) So im guessing the vets cant do anything Have been putting vaseline in the corners when i ride to prevent it hurting as much while riding. But it was suggested to use bonjella, so have been. Any other suggestions? And has anyone else had this trouble? Thanks so much for reading if you got this far!!

fjudge - my Frankie is a Piebald what sort is yours? Re the bit guards & Glymol Mouth Stuff - yes from a tack shop. I've also seen the bit guards in Ride Away, Derby House, Robinsons. If you can't get them give me your address and I'll post some - least I can do for someon with a brilliantly named horse! I'm going to my tack shop on Sat so will check what colours they come in ... apart from black that is.

Fjudge
Go to your saddlers and get some Latex bandage. Wrap it around the bit - all of it or just the corners where it is rubbing. Definitely works for sore mouths.

JB had a very sore mouth when we bought him back. Rode him in a dr. cook bitless bridle to help it heal and took a few months.
Now I ride him in a french link with chamoise leather strips around the end of the bit. He loves it. Doesnt look great though ! LOL
I cut up a chamoise leather into strips, wrapped it around the end and then sew it together.
Good luck.

My mare sometimes has a sore mouth and cracks slightly the best thing I have found is vaseline. She also has a bad habbit of sticking her tongue out to the right and no matter what bit I try she still does this. any ideas as to what I can do to stop her doing this.

put it around the edges of the mouth...it tightens the skin and thus helps a soft and sore mouth getting worse..... Can assure we have had good results with this....it was recommended by a well known showjumper to us...and never had any worries/troubles about the odd little bit getting in the mouth I can only speak as i find......

Just a little update... was at patchetts today and they had the gold label glymol mouth stuff so invested in some (for £4.50 which is rather good) Her mouth is healing...have been using the hemeroid cream for about 1 week. Now using the glymol stuff as its for the mouth anyway so no concerns of her eating it! Thank you to all who suggested options and helped
