Can someone clarify a point for me. If someone has taken their horsebox test and then set themselves up as a "producer" and is being paid to transport and ride other peoples horses at shows should that person hold a CPC? and how about insurance cover for other peoples horses on board? Please can someone clarify these points as I'm a bit confused by it all? Many Thanks :-)

Definitely cpc - if they are transporting others horses on a commercial basis, that involves any hire or reward. Insurance I would not know about, but would have thought they would be declaring to their insurance company that they are transporting others horses as otherwise I would think it would nullify their insurance.

Would they not also need an operators licence as the vehicle is being used for hire and reward?

My friend is a groom for a family, she has just done her hgv but as she was "working" for someone has had to complete her cpc.

What if they are not CPC compliant and are transporting other peoples ponies that they have at livery and are paid to produce? Who can step in and make sure they have the appropriate insurance?

You also need to check your horse insurance covers transport. Even if it covers showing other activities the insurance doesn't actually cover them to travel.

Surely it's up to the owners to ensure the appropriate insurance is in place? If I was paying someone to produce and transport a presumably valuable pony for me, I would make sure they had the correct credentials and insurance cover. Otherwise I would take my business elsewhere.
