I am wanting to rug my shetlands this autumn/winter. This is for entirely selfish reasons, I just want to keep them clean and dry for riding, and also to stop them growing too much winter coat, (although I fear I may be too late for that - they only lost last years' 10 days ago, and they are suddenly looking fluffy again!) as one of my sons has some sensory issues and struggles with muddy/wet long fluffy coat. Looking for recommendations of rugs which might be a good fit and be fairly tough - the ponies do play a lot in the field. I would prefer something middle weight - don't want them overheating, or getting cold becasue I've flattened their coats down but given them nothing to make up for it. I have had a look on the Dinky Rugs website, and liked this one: www.tackandturnout.co.uk/epages/jr29kctxxscu.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/jr29kctxxscu/Products/DRCLCOMH/SubProducts/DRCLCOMHbut in Dusty's size it only has the 600 denier outer, so not sure. Hamish would a 4ft, so he would get the 1200 denier.

I have amigos on my shetland, she's in a 4'6 and is 42" tall. Perfect fit! And it really helps with keeping them clean and dry, mines mainly white and lives out 24/7

Another vote for amigo but bucas also do a little rug that is a fantastic fit on Shetlands. The equine clothing company is another place that does fabulous rugs and equipment for Shetlands

Another vote for Amigo too. I've tried various brands but the Amigo seemed to be the best.

Can't beat Ruggles Shetland rugs. They are fabulous. My standard and mini Shetlands have them. They do 1200d in all sizes too. Couldn't get an Amigo rug anywhere near my Shetlands (far too narrow on the chest and too deep everywhere else).

Thanks for all the tips, everyone. I have decided to try the Ruggles Shetland Rugs, partly swayed by them having a sale on on ebay! Will let you know how we get on.

Thanks again to everyone who helped, thought some feedback might be useful. I ordered the Ruggles rugs, and they came really quickly. They are suberb quality, and I particularly like the fact that they are elasticated round the neck to stop them slipping about, the wind getting in etc.
The only problems is, the sizes are teeny. I measured both ponies propery, then erring on the side of caution, ordered the next size up - 3'9" for Dusty, and 4'3" for Hamish. Have just gone to put them on, and they'll go nowhere near them. The good news is, Dusty is wearing the 4' 3" one, it fits him beautifully and he looks cute as a button (although the Highland mare over the fence from him thinks he is TERRIFYING), so hopefully they have a bigger one for Hamish left in stock.

Another one for Ruggles and second going up a size, especially if your shetties and chunky buggers like mine!
