I've only had my boy a few weeks and took him to a local show at the weekend where the comments from the judges were 'poor condition'. So, as the title suggests, I'm just looking for suggestions/advice regarding feeding for improving condition - what do you use/recommend? Here is a photo of him, he's just turned 7. Thank you

I dont think he looks in poor condition?
I feed my fell,ad lib hay, and then as a bucket soaked grass nuts, speedi beet, linseed, and grass chaff with access to a mineral lick, fruit and veg through winter as extras and he looks really really well on this through out the year i just increase and decrease as necessary. We are in NE Scotland though and can have really bad winters!

In this photo he looks fine to me, not fat for showing but certainly not poor.

I don't know what this judge was looking at but your Fell is in no way in poor condition. I would say he's perfect but it depends really on what you are doing with him and at what level. If you look at the ponies at the FPS stallion show for example they are generally not as well covered shall we say as ponies that are on the circuit doing ridden showing. we have 5 Fell colts and none of them are fat and they all do very well in the showring. So if your boy were mine I would be forgetting about these comments and maintaining his current weight. He's a lovely boy by the way, how is he bred? Good luck with him

I agree with the above he's certainly not in 'poor condition' - and you see so many that are over weight in the ring nowadays - he looks super - Good Luck with him!

Remember that is only one judge's opinion so get a balance of views before doing anything different

He is about the same weight as one of mine, whom has been out winning under saddle all season, I haven't shown him in hand as I have been running my other one on but in the one he did early season the judge thought he could do with a few lbs on I think it's just in hand showing. He is ridden 6 days a week though and is about to start hunting so i'd rather he was fit than fat! Your pony looks in perfect condition.

I would not say he is poor either. Don't fatten him up on the say of one judge.

Thank you all, reading your comments has made me feel so much better! I've only had him 5 weeks but absolutely adore him! His name is Dalewin Kingpin aka Derek!!!

A grey Dalewin foal made top price at the sale last October. Not seen many around but lovely ponies! ETA just found a picture of your boy as a baby and seen he's by Murthwaite Windrush. I think he's the same shape and stamp as Windy and as the current HOYS champion that can't be a bad thing can it?

A judge will us a comment like that just as an excuse not to place him, because they can give you a better answer, he's looks ok to me.
