General question: I always thought judges should stay as detached from the show as possible. Now if a judge was to present ponies on behalf of the show host in the morning and then judge the under saddle classes in the afternoon would this be acceptable would you say? I've never heard of anything like this before but the person was quite upset when I asked them what it was about. I made a comment on FB to express my confusion and received a rather harsh PM in return suggesting I was trying to badmouth the show. As it happens yes I do know the show host from past dealings and no I'm not surprised. Is this normal? I'm just asking. Didn't have anything in the show and do not plan to hold one myself *lol*

I've always thought that a judge shouldn't show and judge at the same show - how do you remain completely objective? I think it's the same as being on a show committee and showing at "your" show. You may not have picked the judges but you do leave yourself wide open to critism and the show boycotted!
Their probably isn't any impropriety but it's the perceived advantage.
Perhaps I'm wrong ..............

if an affiliated show , then no you should not, what unaffiliated shows do is down to them, however I would imagine that their competitors will vote with their feet.

Just in terms of judging and competing it would depend on which society if any the show is affiliated too. BSPS judges are not allowed to judge and compete at same show (except BSPS Championship shows) but can compete under a different society if judging BSPS classes so for example could do NPS classes - I think that is still correct?

I am amazed anyone would think that it was ok to do so. At any show. I have known a show chairman choose the judge under which he then showed his ponies.

I'm not saying it is a good thing to do, merely what shows can do, Chloesmum has been more accurate than me

Unless under SPECIFIC societies rules not alot you can do, ive had judges compete and judge a different section later in the day, not providing not a conflict for instance judged horses but showed ponies, then shouldnt be a problem, down to looking at the individual situation, I know some societies have a total ban on it

the only way to stop this practice for affiliated classes is for members to go to the AGM's and raise the matter. Very few bother to attend these meetings, if you don't go then don't moan

Can I just add that whilst people might think that committee members should not compete at their own area shows for our area that would mean we didn't have a show as most of our hardworking committee are parents whose children compete. We are a very small area and rely on these good people to assist. However what we do try and do is ensure the show sub-committee is headed up by non-competing members. Running shows is not easy and without the support of our committee members it would be impossible for us.
