I decided this year with my exracer in her mid twenties to find a foal with the idea it would follow her when she retires and while im sure ive done the right things and shes a joy i cant help but question every decision i make i just want her brought up perfect as i know how important it is to get it right !!!!!!.
Heres the good bits
I wanted something special but a bit differant to compete affiliated/county level having already done plenty of RC activities already some county showing and worked previously for an eventer competing at 3* level who gave me some real admiration for a good sport horse and i had dressage in mind at the time.My mare has lots of problems many due to previous bad care and had come to me in a bad way with a few horror stories so i feared id come across this again and wanting a whole new challange i decided on a foal with a huge list of exactly what i wanted them to be like i wanted a sport horse type well bred and atheletic to do a job but having enjoyed showing i wanted something with the presence to hold their own in a show ring i also decided i wanted a palomino so spent a long time looking just for a good stud let alone the right foal once found it was like fate fell into action my filly was born 2 weeks at least early on my elderly mares birthday after contacting the stud 3 days earlier about another donnerhall Hanoverian bred mare she had in foal who was gaurenteed a palomino. This foal was palomino had 2 even back socks star and snip (as in my wish list yes it was that precise)she does have small bit of white on front fetlock too though markings for a dream foal are negotiable she had lots of intrest on the stud facebook page and i knew the lady had a few people after a filly Mum was more sj bred but graded well with KWPN (concorde/ramiro z/voltaire) though she had evented too i hadnt really looked at her so looked into her further and was amazed to see she had previously been with my old boss (fate) everyone who saw her agreed she seemed perfect so at 2 days old i paid a deposit to reserve her despite being double my budget!, naming her symphony ( my mare tb is flute)
I got everything perfect over five months and agonized over every little decision every detail had to be perfect thankfully the breeder was fantastic with me and it was clear she was well cared for and much loved prior to coming home. now 2 months on she so good in so many ways she generally leads very well is brillant with her feet/farrier vet, wears her rug, ties up good as gold happy in her stable comes to call she rarely bites and after a stern telling off on her 3rd day has never made an attempt to raise a leg to anybody. Shes attended her first show ncpa standing like an angel in foal chamionship of 18 babies troting up like shed done it all before not to mention being trimmed plaited tail and legs washed loading into a box travelling and standing in a crowded car park for an hour often held by my non horsey step dad. she seems to be growing well shes 5 inches in 2 months and a good weight well covered ribs easily felt shes just on TS stud balancer. Shes lovely natured too loves people and her preferred reward is a scratch and when worried is earily stroking her ears tring to hide under your arm
But heres the worries
she wouldnt settle with our mare herd for the end of summer turnout when she arrived and seems to now be very frightened of other horses having been bullied by them she just stood rearing and charging at the gate so for her safety we just put her with my mare whos mummy-ed her and is very gentle turnout is now limited due to weather so theyre out idvidually anyway but im concerned for next year at one point i even considered buying her a friend and that shes so attached to my mare :S
She also doesnt seem to think much to going out regardless my old mare loves to be out playing shes waiting in a morning letting me know she wants out foal is content with her hay i think it important horses are out the stable as much as possible espcially babies but my foal goes out wanders about has a bit of buck and a eat and after a couple of hours waits by the gate
she also still has little stropy rearing fits leading mostly when its something new though she still occasionally just decides she doesnt want to go somewhere shes never won as such and goes where shes told but should i get her down and moving fowards and egnore or be telling her off on some occasions when shes immediatly walked on and contiued messing about she has been told off too. I know lots of babies rear and her episodes are quite mild probably by a lot of standards but its something id like to her to stop sooner rather than later.
She also came off the trailer from the stud (about a 2 hours away) a little stiff and puffy on one leg the day after she had bashed about a bit at one point travelling and throwing herself about at weaning shed a few nicks and tiny grazes this happened again after shed been charging at the gate and cut her leg though both appeared a bit puffy and warm my vet assured me it didnt concern him as there was quite a strain put on little legs doing silly things and shes had no further problems but just worried me a little there was more to it.
And as the owner of a picky hard to feed tb am i really feeding her right shes on adlib hayledge with a cup and a half twice a day of top spec stud mixed with light half stubb scoop chaff as advised by top spec but im often being told and reading foals shouldnt have feed and the amount advised by feed companies is to much ?!
Im left wondering much as i beem with pride when she gets it right how people dont go mad with worry am i the only one probably not but feels good to write it down picture included of the little monster!
