ISRTs will have varying shaped backs, even the same native breeds can have different shaped backs. Do you have a good saddle fitter you can work with? personally I recommend a very slightly deeper and softer panel than many ultra close contact showing saddles have.

I have a fabulous local one but she specialises in Eventer, SJ saddles. She has got me a day to day saddle and usual go to Fylde for show saddle as she does me a template.

Black Country, far better fit, can be flocked and adjusted as they change and according to my daughter the most comfortable saddle she's ridden in, after owning several fylde, native pony and ideals.

Do also bear in mind that in future you may wish to show this animal in classifications which require exhibits to be Judge Ridden (Not knowing your animal's 'type' or Breeding, but, for example [and guessing here], Show Hack or Show Riding Horse; perhaps also Ridden Part/Anglo Arab). So, whilst comfort and correct fit for the horse is of course paramount, so is immediate comfort for the Ride Judge, who is only on your horse for an approx. two minute appraisal! Naturally, Ride Judges are not stereotyped to size & gender - and may not be your build, either.

Really sound advice from Caroline, just what I was going to post! We found ride judges did not appreciate our showing saddle on our old Intermediate! Also a good idea to have a longer set of stirrup leathers to hand if you do classes where the judges ride (or shotter if appropriate - often my daughter has to have them twisted for her when she ride judges!) We had an Ideal saddle which was very comfortable for all - good luck.

Ooo I'll keep that in mind she's 147cm and only 4 ATM so she's likely to change shape and she a typical mare shape! So finding a saddle has been difficult and I want to get one which fits her. I'm only 5ft and 8st 7 so longer stirrups is a good idea!

If I'm allowed to say we have fitters for our saddles, a wide range of showing and neat WH saddles, covering most of the country. Trees and flocking adjustable, and many ride judges comment on how comfy our saddles are, as well as our customers . Make sure if you go for a brand stocked by a tack shop that the fitter is A1, I've seen some very nice showing and WH saddles fitted to totally the wrong shaped horses (eg hoop trees on NFs just because they're an XW) by local generalist saddle fitters.

If you call them they will tell you who your local approved fitter is think, or a local stockist. I am lucky that my fab qualified fitter happens to do Black Country as one of her preferred brands, so she comes out and looks after ours (I bought it at a champs before knowing my saddler could have sourced it!)
She will template, order from BC then fit it, or help find a second hand one. Shame I'm miles from you.

Ooo thanks. Do Black Country saddles come to fit? (I'm in Devon!) Leonard coombes fit black country saddles and is a registered master saddle fitter. I showed a little hunter pony stallion in one and it was very comfortable. I also rode in the worker one which was also super comfy. Leonard coombes are in newton abbot just google them. X
