Hi everyone,
I'm in need of some advice and help as I'm at my witts end completely!
I have a 5 year old 17.3 mare, who I have owned since she was 2. I have always walked her out in hand on a busy road since the age of 2 ready for backing. She was fine on the roads once backed and not phased at all, then all of a sudden started to freak out at loud noises behind her, nothing happened to cause this in terms of an accident Ect however,When she was 4 she damaged her stiffle, it did take us a while to diagnose this... And I now believe that a loud noise on the road caused her to maybe jump sideways or whatever and hurt the stiffle (after the initial stifle injury) and she now associats loud noises from behind with pain?
She damaged her stifle we think from falling in the field, and because she wasn't lame it took us a while to diagnose, until we x-rayed.
She isn't in pain now as we have had the vet out and back and teeth checked.
It's got to the point where I can't even walk her in hand for a 100 yards on the road with out her going crazy, she's bucking, rearing, trotting side ways, throwing her head and some times will even tremble.
I've tried standing her at the top of the lane with treats to just watch the traffic, long lining and leading her out.
It's making it so difficult for me because we don't have an arena so hacking until the fields are dry enough to work her in is all I can do,and it's essential to bring her back in to work. I don't want to be stuck with a horse who won't go on the road as where we stable there is no options for an off road hack.
I'm currently trying to get an audio CD of traffic noises to play in to her stable so she gets used to the noise and associates it with safety.
Any other suggestions/experiences or help greatly appreciated. X
