Ok so my 4 year old hack as stopped eating his fibre beet and everyone on the yard is now using this ready mash extra and swear by it, my only concern is that it has alot of cereals in it and is high in starch and sugar so worried it will make my not long broken, already sharp boy abit too fizzy, so have been reading up on the solution mash which seems good for weight gain but no cereals or sugar, has anyone used these products and which would you recommend? He is immature and does need weight but not at the detriment of his temperament. Thanks

Can not rate solution mash highly enough and everyone I've recommended it love it. Its high oil content low in starch and sugar is great for our lami ponies and my horse that can't have cereals. It also didnt heat my horse up whereas the micronised linseed did nothing for condition but sent him loopy. We found you dont have to feed loads to get weight on
It has quite a distinctive smell and we had to introduce it slowly to my fussy eater

I have used both, the extra did not hot up my fizzy mare at all (fi you're worried try the blue bag?). I changed to the solution mash in the summer when out at grass as I was worried about the sugar and starch content. I now use micronised linseed along with Topspec lite balancer and they all look great - you can add or take away the linseed to suit. Less faff than soaking it too - the only bad thing about the solution mash is that it takes longer to soak and some might not eat it. My pony went off it after a while.

Ready mash extra is very palatable and has never heated up any of my horses. It is high in starch, but iv never had a problem with it. The solution mash is very low starch but I have had difficulty with horses eating it, even if they've never been fussy before, and had others report this too. So might be an idea to try and get a sample from Rowan barbary before buying a full bag.

I haven't tried either of these, but just wanted to make the point that starch is not ideal for equines, particularly natives, as it predisposes to insulin resistance, EMS and laminitis. Not so vital to avoid for a hack, but wanted to make sure readers in general had full information on which to base their decision.

I use Rowen Barbary Ready Fibre Mash for my laminitis prone mare this winter and she loves it. High fibre, low starch and sugar in the green bag. Can be used as a hay replacer. Has no dust particles either so good for animals with breathing problems.

Soft N soak solution mash has been fab for us, helps put on condition with out getting fizzy as low in starch and sugars. Only problem round our way is getting hold of the stuff!

I use the red extra on my two ex racers and they don't heat up. My Warmblood has the blue as he's chunky enough already. They also have micronised linseed.
