Is this a show as in one of the hunter weights or a show hunter as in the intermediates?

It's not specifically in a hunter class, i just have to do a freestyle show and my horse is a hunter type (HW). I had planned on doing a canter serpentine, but would that be un-hunterish?

I don't really know the specifics of the class and if they expect you to perform to 'type' but I would definitely want to see a hunter flowing forward and covering the ground. So good obedience and lightness, but not too many twiddles! But that's just me. Depends how long you have too!

We have a small hunter and I think we would base the show on showing off the obedience and the gallop. Choose the show that you know your horse will show itself off. Normally on that type of show there are usually time limits, 2 minutes, and a compulsory walk, trot and canter on both reins. How you fit those into your show is up to you. Have you read the rules for the class? if so, let me know what they ask for, if I can make any suggestions I will happily help

Thanks guys, i think I'll keep it simple - no point trying to be fancy and not being able to pull it off :-)

Thanks guys, i think I'll keep it simple - no point trying to be fancy and not being able to pull it off :-) You've got it exactly right! Know what your horse does best and can do without you worrying if you are going to pull it out of the bag on the day! The type of show you are mentioning is usually 'style and performance' with specific elements to be completed. It might not ask for a gallop but may ask for extensions in trot and canter. Sometimes adding elements that are not asked for will not get higher marks and leave you open to lose marks if the elements are not carried out accurately. If you and the horse are good at canter circles, then a circle at each end looks good. A really good walk and square halt hits the mark accurately. Work your show out on paper so that you can see that you have a good flowing show and keep within the time limits. Marks can either be lost for going over time or you could be asked to stop the show at the 2 minute (or whatever time you are allowed). Ideally, work out your show time by asking a friend to time you. Good luck
