Hey guys it's going to be my boys first working hunter class in a few weeks time..he's a traditional with a very long mane..I was wondering if I could plait it so it's not in the way or does it need to be down? I've never done this class before so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance x

Depends what class you want to enter. If working hunter then plait, if M&M then leave natural as if you are showing in an M&M class.

Well a trad shouldn't be in an M&M class anyway, and normal plaiting of a very long mane would give you lumpy - why not do what we used to call an "Arab plait" along the length of the mane if leaving it loose would be too much in the way? For general undefined classes such as dressage we tended to turn out correctly for the breed/type.

As Sarahp says, do a running/Arab plait for jumping. Don't do it to tight so you can take it out for your individual. That way you are showing true to type for ridden yet mane out of the way for jumping. I'm sure others will correct me if I am wrong but I think this would be perfectly acceptable?

I leave it loose and natural when we jump (and for dressage!) as personally that's how I think a trad should be turned out. It's very very hard to find a WH class a trad can do!! But at chaps they were all loose

Often see a long thick forelock in a loose plait tucked into noseband so the pony can see for the jumping phase - leaving rest of mane natural.
