So yesterday my mum rung to say my old boy took 3 attempts to get up after having his roll. Probably not helped by the awfully wet ground but yesterday afternoon I went and for the first time his eyes looked tired. It made me feel sick! I'm certainly not ready to say goodbye and he then proceeded to snort at a rug he had knocked on the floor in his stable! I'm just dreading getting a phone call 1 day to say he can't get up (in which case we have said we wouldn't even attempt to and the vet would be called) I never want him to suffer but 3 days ago I walked him out and he jogged the whole was back to his stable with ears pricked. Feeling sorry for him as I wonder what he must be thinking ?

Ive a lump in my throat for you. I think you will know yourself when its time to say goodbye. The weather over the last few days has been awful, cold, damp and generally miserable. I have been walking round with tired eyes too. Its always a horrible time of year, the light nights have gone, its a long haul to springtime, the cold makes those slight twinges turn into regular niggles. Im keeping my ponies tucked up warm & cosy but everything in the stables has been damp and drab, hoping this yukky fog is now blown away for good.

I have friend who would waite until her horse could not get up before she would get out the vet. I could not do that, my last old boy was 28 and was gradually getting stiffer so I had the hunt out before the bad weather came. It hard for you but not for them.

Don't keep him alive just because you aren't ready for the end. Be brave enough to think of him , not you. I keep all mine to the end and it's never easy but they must come first.

I had my old Welsh section A PTS at the end of August. He hadn't come out of the winter well and hadn't put weight on through the summer, the vet said there was nothing wrong with him it was just old age had caught up. A couple of days before he was due to be PTS I took him for a walk up the bridle way opposite my place, he jogged and snorted all the way back at the race horses on their summer holidays charging up and down in their fields next the the bridleway. He had a lovely time but it didn't make me go home and ring Cremtor and cancel them coming!! Leaving a pony until it can no longer get up is cruel and irresponsible. You may not be ready to say goodbye but he may be ready to go, the welfare of our animals must always come first. Better a day too soon than a day too late. Be brave and get it sorted, you will feel relieved afterwards, its the thought that it is going to happen that's the hard part

I don't feel he is ready yet. He looks fantastic and went out like the clappers buy struggled to get up due to the wet ground as he kept slipping. He is actually better in winter than summer as the hard ground does his legs no good. I am hoping that I will know when he is ready and I still rode him up until a couple of months ago. It's so hard knowing what is coming and the vet who saw him last month doesn't seem to think he is ready yet either but who knows what is round the corner. We have everything planned for when the day comes and if I think he is ready the vet will be called straight away. Surely some people struggle with the decision of when the time is right? Especially with him being my only (and last) horse. I know if my mum or some other people that know him even knew I was thinking or talking about it would be horrified.

We got a twenty nine year old that started getting stiff at this time of year, so we rug her up to the eyeballs and she s much happier, not stiff, her bones are kept warm. She ran on the hills til seventeen so many miles on the clock.

He's 26 and a lot happier in and rugged when the weather is bad. He has perked up and been rolling every morning and getting up first time so hopefully it was just a blip.
