If I was you I would have a blood check, it might be anaemic, if it is it is easy to sort out. Other than that anything with peas or beans have high protein, or maize should help. Remember when changing a horse's diet do it gradually. Also consider his fitness levels, it really would not matter what you fed if he is not fit.

I am always interested to read advice on this subject because (I don't have a current candidate) those lacking energy were only really impacted by general food quality, condition and fitness. Temperament seems to have a huge impact too!

Assuming the pony is fit and well I highly recommend power and performance.
It has helped my fell wonders, just gives him a bit more oomph. However he is still a lazy pony and that's just his personality. Keeping his mind occupied and workload varied works wonders as well.

I do sometimes wonder if ponies kept only for flat showing get bored, so grumpy and lazy!

I do sometimes wonder if ponies kept only for flat showing get bored, so grumpy and lazy! Oh I agree Sarahp and that is what is in the back of my mind although he isn't overshown and never has been but its just in his nature. I have to say if I take him across an open field he certainly isn't lazy then

I also agree, do vary your work and what you do, hack, go and do some gymkhana games... that should get him going, have a beach ride, have fun!!

Even if they 'just' do flat showing, I think a varied work schedule is needed for most animals, really.
