I have a mare that has recently been scanned with osteoarthritis in her neck and stifle, she also has kissing spine too.
She has been injected with steroids but is still slightly lame front and back. She also has a tilted pelvis.
She is only young and vets have said she will not be able to be ridden nor be a Broodmare due to having so much going on.
She's not an easy mare to deal with and doesn't really like being turned out constantly but again hates her stable.
I feel awful making the ultimate decision as she's not crippled and just wanted to hear any other views or If anyone has experienced similar
Thanks

She may not be crippled yet but she will end up being in pain, and in fact if she is difficult could well be in pain now. I personally who have her pts, I think that is the kindest thing to do, plus you need to be sensible. It is not cheap to keep any horse even if you own your own land, she does not sound like a happy bunny so I would get your local huntsman in so she is at home, she will not know anything about it, you are the one who will be upset. DO NOT listen to anyone who says you are being cruel or selfish, you are not!

I suppose it boils down to your circumstances. If it were me being on a livery yard I would have to look at it all very realistically and decide if my head ruled or my heart. She will not have much quality of life if she's stuck inside and potentially for 15 years?

Thanks everyone.
She really doesn't do the stable thing and it worries me that winter will be next and she will not be able to be turned out nor can I exercise her. We have our own place so paying livery isn't the issue. She's a homebred mare so she's quite sentimental as we delivered her but the last thing I want to see is her in pain.
I know she will only get worse it's just getting your head around it
