can I ask what you need this valued for? Insurance? Litigation? Export? Sale? A qualified Instructor or a Judge on the panel of the breed or type you require valuing. But you must state what it is being valued for, if Insurance then you need to confirm with the insurance company involved if the person's qualifications are acceptable, the same with export, but you need to enquire with the Customs and revenue office. If litigation you must make certain the person would be classified has an "expert Witness" your Solicitor should be able to advise you on this. You must advise the person you employ the reason for the valuation.

Well I would contact your breed society to ask them for an approved Valuer. When you contact them you must state what it is for as they may have to attend court to substantiate their valuing of the horse. There will be a fee for this and for valuing the horse. Or contact the BHS, they may have a list of people in your area. Do not get a friend to do it, it must be someone totally independent to you and the other side.

I've had to do this sort of independent arbitrary stuff (in the capacity of Breeder, Show Professional and, qualified to represent various Breed & Showing Societies on their Judging Panels [I'm also a BHS Welfare Officer]). It is not an easy task. One such, a while ago now, was to put a 'potential' value on a promising youngster who's legs had (hideously) gone through the floor of a hired horse trailer, hired in all good faith from a supposedly reputable company. How long is a piece of string . . .? I would most seriously advise using an Equine savvy Solicitor to support you through this, who will be experienced in this field. There are a number; in fact, a few of whom are also Vets. Yes, it may cost, but if you feel this is an animal of value, then do try to do so. Google: Equine Specialist Solicitors.

I agree Caroline, I would go to an equine solicitor. If you have never been through litigation I can only say that it eats up your life. Be very certain you want to go down this route, unless you have lost thousands I would walk away, but that is me. All I can say is good luck.
