Delighted to see that Search for a star is introducing a traditional cobs series with the final at HOYS but rather confused. It is open to "pure bred" gypsy cobs. What on earth do you mean by that? I have 2 trads, one a tinkers' pony from Ireland and one bred by English travellers. Both look very different to each other coming from very different stock, but both have won at a top level. Neither have bloodlines recorded, and neither could be proved as originating from gypsies. What does pure bred mean, its almost like asking for a pure bred mongrel dog to me. What am I missing? Then we are told my CHAPS passport will need to be overstamped by TGCA to maintain "standards". But isn't that the job of the judge at the qualifier? Again am I missing something or is my suspicion that it is a moneymaker by the TGCA? Any entry without a TGCA passport will need to be overstamped, quite a lucrative business for TGCA. I don't mind but I would like the TGCA to be honest rather than trying to justify it by saying the ponies need to be a purebred gypsy cob. Surely these ponies are a type and not a bloodline, that might come in the future but we are many years from that.

Me too! I’m riding a 4 year old solid coloured gypsy cob (came over from Ireland) no idea of sire, I emailed TGCA about how to register and was just referred to the application for passport overstamping on their website. Seems like as long as you’re registered with them, you’re fine.
I would like a definitive answer though 🙄

Confused or what? Traditional Gypsy Cob's are a BREED not a TYPE and have been since June 2012. As far as i understand it The TGCA is the BREED ASSOCIATION approved by DEFRA to hold the Mother Studbook for Traditional Gypsy Cob Breed and as a Passport Issuing Office (PIO) in the UK and European Union which means they are legally obliged to have a BREED Standard. This is why it's the TGCA's job to maintain standards not the judges but there are different types within the Standard. Really it's no different than a Welsh, They have their BREED Standards but their are different types within that Standard. All Welsh Sec A's don't look the same do they? I think the key here is we are talking about a BREED not a TYPE. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/708578/pio-list-studbooks.pdf

Sorry but still think this is rather expensive.
