Just after bank balance starts to recover from Christmas..then the various society subs.....the lorry recovery renewal is looming...
Which lorry recovery service would you recommend? Not just based on price, but experience. Thanks.
ps lorry is HVG.

We with SEIB they have recovered me and horses and taken lorry to garage when a wheel bearing had a mad turn on the M6 en route to Midland Counties... They were excellent . My friends had a horrific experience with A Evans Insurance recently or rather with rescue Co they sent .... I had to go and collect ponies as they wouldnt wait for a transporter and the garage was insisting lorry went on a low loader with ponies still on board

I have had really positive experience with SEIB, on the 4 occasions over the past 6 years that I have had to use them they have been quick effecient and helpful...including the time that my lorry died on the M27 with a full load of horses on it.....

Funnily enough I was left on a motorway when covered by SEIB a few years ago. It was dark and I had 3 tired and filthy horses/riders on board after hunting . The problem was that we did not carry a spare tyre and were told at the time of taking out insurance and recovery that in the event of a blowout, they would arrange tyre assistance but we would have to pay at roadside for the tyre. The call centre just told us we weren't covered. I begged them to call out a tyre company on my behalf (funnily enough I didn't have yellow pages to hand...and phone battery was dying due to excessive cold!) and we would pay for the whole thing by c/card at roadside. They refused. We eventually arranged our own assistance, after seeing a tyre truck pass us and remembering the number! When I complained to them the next working day they weren't very apologetic! I too have heard that Evans may insist on putting you on a low loader! Not sure I fancy that with equines on board! I have heard that OHTA are fantastic....maybe the old adage of "you get what you pay for" is true?

I'm with Equestrian Support Services and the only time I called them out they were fantastic! It was only just over £100 for a year. 01300 348997. Really wide cover and very efficient. Avoid Shearwater at all costs. Was with them before and they were hopeless.

I was with OHTO for a few years and they were okay on the whole (although the one time I needed transport for the ponies, I had to wait 6 hours - luckily I was at a show) but if I can save a bit of money and get the same level of service, then that would be a bonus.

I cannot recommend NFU highly enough, no idea what actual recovery service they use, but on the 2 occasions in the last 10 years we have needed them they have come up trumps. Broke down in Talgarth (you know the tiny windy village) on the way to the Royal Welsh, no chance of fixing lorry, transporter arrived took the 2 stallions we had on board to our lodgings (not the showground), lorry was taken to Abergavenny and delivered back the next day. Last year we broke down on the way Kent County, although we waited two hours for someone to come and look at lorry, which unfortunately only took 5 minutes to fix (something came loose), the NFU recovery service were ringing us every 20 minutes to make sure ponies were OK and to check if we were going to need them transported. Don't know how much, it's included in the insurance - which isn't dear either.

We have road rescue with NFU as well, and we've never had to use it, but got a bill for a lorry we had recently sold, and their time for recovery was on the bill, she broke down on the M25, but it was under an hour.

Has anyone tried the CO-OP insurance with the breakdown cover? I have got my lorry insured with them fully comp & also had the breakdown option for an extra £30. I asked about 4 times if they could make sure that it covered 7.5 tonners & they confirmed that it does! I think all in it was about £250 for a year complete with protected no claims & windscreen cover.

I personally insure with the NFU and would not go past them. I used to be a transport contractor for ESS and OHTO so have teken horses home for both of them in the past. Make sure you read all the small print is all I would say. Here are the links for both. OHTO and ESS. www.horsebox-rescue.co.uk/tchb.htmlwww.equestriansupport.co.uk/

I was with Equestrian Support.
En route to NPS finals last year my box broke down on the M4. The recovery lorry and team were fantastic and efficiently towed us to their garage. However, we then waited four hours for the lorry to take our ponies back home at the garage (this after 4 hours wait on M4).
When lorry arrived it was driven by a smoking slug who didn't even want to lower his ramp. We and the garage guys took our (by then) rather upset two stallions off our box and onto this guys, who's only contribution was to light up his fifth f*g in five minutes and say...'if yer damage it yer pay me and thats in cash mate!.
We then had a nightmare journey home - 140 miles of mounting kerbs as he lit f*g after f*g and was constantly on his mobile, we went right over one roundabout that he failed to see and to top it all, when we got home, he refused to drive down the farm drive (a mile long) as it may upset his battered crappy junk heap of a lorry. We then had to take the two sweaty nervous stallions by headcollar, as he wouldn't allow us time to bridle them up, down the farm drive in pitch blackness.
And what did Equestrian support do when we complained.........
Gave us a bill for going over the severn bridge, even though we never left Wales!!!!!
Then tried to take out proceedings against us because we refused to pay it (and VAT on it, which we pointed out was illegal).
Guess who I am not with any more?

Well my lorry is only 3.5tons its a trailer type mounted on a ford transit, so when i had a blow out on the m25 in rush hour i went into a complete panick, so rang the rac whom i have recovery with for my car they came out and were brilliant changed the tyre for me followed me to the local garage to check tyre pressure on all tyres, there was no extra charge just gave the man a tip.

Can't fault NFU arrange everything, keep you informed all the way phone back on your mobile, are very reasonable, for the person who was charged after selling lorry make sure you notify NFU and return the insurance certificate to them when I first had my previous lorry it had been insured by the last owner with NFU and they hadn't cancelled it properly which caused initial confusion, but can't fault their breakdown support both for vehicle and equines. Would be very wary of recovery with non equine based companies NFU split the service so you get proper horse transporters for your equines.

OHTO and ESS. My lorry isn't insured with NFU, so breakdown with them isn't an option unfortunately. I'm not aware of anything in the small print of OHTO that overly concerns me - can you PM me if there is something I have missed. I need to get some kind of breakdown cover in place as our lorry is an old bird now!

I can highly reccomend SEIB, we broke down at the weekend (7pm on a sunday evening, first ever outing with our first ever box) luckily i had a very good traveler on board, but the rescue service where with us within half an hour and got us going in no time at all. The man who came out couldnt do enough for us, he even got under the lorry to clean filters whilst it was parked on the side of the road, and then he got back under and checked our floor (did this because of an off the cuff comment from me!) I've even got the companies number and they will be servicing my lorry from now on!
Ive never had worry about it before now as ive always had a new trailer and a New Merc to pull it with. Of course the Merc was covered by the mercedes recovery system who also would of picked our horses up and supplied us a car to get home in. The car never let us down so never had to worry.

Cannot praise NFU highly enough. BUT dont forget they only "put out" the cover to breakdown services, it is up to the service as to how you are treated. If lucky you get a decent one if not tough. I travel hundreds and hundreds of miles in the lorry and have done for 30 years, plenty of breakdowns and still prefer the service used by NFU. Though did have one where the rescue lorry picked up my hacks and promptly broke down 30 miles on. That left 2 broken down lorries. Great fun, arrived at the show in London at midnight.

I have just tried to take out insurance and breakdown cover with NFU and they won't do it they say the lorry is too old ho hum! it isn't that old, in fact it is quite young to many you see. If I already had an existing policy with them they would insure it apparently.
Anyway I have just taken out South Essex insurance and breakdown no problem and am very impressed with the cost. I used them before a long time ago now and had to call on the breakdown service twice, both times they were very good and had someone with me within an hour so here's hoping they still are good!

In addition to the above I also found NFU quite annoying on the phone, they were more interested in trying to sell me horse, car and house insurance than get on with the horsebox quote I had asked for South Essex never once mentioned any other products

SEIB have been excellent and very helpful. Only used the breakdown cover once and it was excellent. On our way to PUK and the lorry ground to a halt - blocked filters cleared it and showed us what to do in case it happened again - waited about an hour for them to arrive
