What happened that your daughter couldn't/wasn't allowed to stand the pony up and what did Mr Ramsay say when he was "quite blunt"?

Re. the judging of the pony classes @ SFAS qualifying rounds, i have just had it put to me that yesterday's judges are experienced show horse judges not show pony/show hunter pony judges ~ perhaps it's time to have a pony judge judging the pony class? To my knowledge, over the years the Ramsays have produced a huge number of SPs/SHPs and intermediates with a great deal of success as well as judging them regularly and running young judges' training days for BSPS etc, so not really inexperienced with ponies IMO. Not sure who else was judging the ponies yesterday so cannot comment on that count...

So what if it was in 2006! It's still the same judges!!! In the rules also it states that just because you get placed 1st or 2nd, it doesnt mean you automatically qualify for HOYS, and you will only qualify if the judges think the animals are of a suitable standard for HOYS.....so obviously the judges did think the ponies were good enough and not ''riding club type'' as said previously in this thread. Again it comes down to the "you win some you lose some" just enjoy taking part & be happy if your animal goes well....after all..HOYS isnt the be all end all is it!

Firstly Well done Baileybob for qualifying her lovely cob!!!
I have to say though I was a little disappointed! I took my hunter, who granted is not top class county level - but he is unbeaten PUK etc. The hunter class was split like so many of the others odds and evens. I was in the odd class (no comments please) with about 20 others, the evens class which followed had 8! So thats my first complaint! On the go around A coloured horse doubled barreled at my horse - lucky it was me behind her and not some of the wolleys who were up each others backsides! It was right in front of the judge and nothing was said and she continued! The lady next to me in the line was kicked by another horse and that horse was also allowed to stay! On the go around, the steward was shouting to canter on not extend or gallop and so the Gallop was missed by several people! The go round was down right dangerous due to numbers of BIG hunters! Anyway I was pulled in middle of the line, so second ride judge rode my horse who appeared to give a lovely ride. I am not disputing the winner she is a lovely girl and horse is lovely well deserved! I did go for feedback from the ride judge who said he gave a very nice, mannerley ride, was well educated and the only one which he felt comfortable to ask for a gallop which he did. So I asked why the low pull and was told, he isnt the right type, he is a job horse that should be out hacking and hunting!!!! He is a heavyweight in a class of small and lightweight hunters so no he doesnt look as flashy but he is still more than a "job" horse!!
So anyway rant over, I agree with earlier comments, I found it very difficult to know what the judges were looking for, and it appeared they did go for type over way of going and manners. I can only assume because there is time to work on those things!
Got to say its not an experience I want to repeat.

I couldn't follow the judging all day, it was the first SFAS I have watched and I have to say I was disappointed. Lots of comments from other people at the ringside too so it wasn't just me :\

They were RC types at the venues I went to in '02 & '04 and the winners were also told in the final line up on both occassions that 'this will be your only chance to get to HOYS, you probably won't get there again' by a lovely lady - don't think that was very nice!

Firstly Well done Baileybob for qualifying her lovely cob!!! Thank you ;D I watched the Riding horse/hack go round which looked pretty hairy! The cobs (well our half anyway, didn't see the other half!) really didn't seem as hectic - apart from a few people who just wouldn't keep canter despite several requests from the steward - very frustrating when people are constantly trotting on the track - it all seemed to go fairly smoothly. Hottoddy - thank your Mum again for me, we had a chuckle whilst the judges were deliberating and I didn't get to see her after so tell her well done from me. I saw yoour boy briefly in the stables - he is yummy, can't wait to meet him properly ;D

I would just like to comment on the Hunter class i to was there and can i just say that there were 14 in the odd section and 9 in the even section so obviously there wernt as many even numbers that declared as odd numbers it is very difficult to know how to split classes and this is the way that SFAS chose to split them i was in the even section but can i say i thought that the judges were polite and gave every competitor a fair chance we cant win them all my 17.2hh 5 year old was so well behaved and yes we got 6th but i got some lovely comments from the judges, i just think that yes we are all devestated when our horses are not the judges type but take it on the chin and well done to the horses that have won and qualified lets not take it away from them they deserved it on the day

No that wasnt very nice of her to say at all! Seems like everyone has had different experiences of this competition as i had a very positive one where as others have not...its the same with any show though isnt it...thats showing for you.

You are a miserable lot of bad losers. We have been very happy with the judges. Accept that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that every judge has a different opinion. Go home happy to have been of the standard suitable to take part and try to prove them wrong and qualify without the need of this competition.

Gosh I really would like to know what qualified and not because of the content of this thread but because it was the search for a star qualifier in our area-we could not take our pony as he has already been to Hoys but would have loved the opportunity to take part as my daughter has always wanted to go to HOYS and it is so difficult to qualify in the open classes especially in this area.
Please pm me with the results and it will go no further than that if you feel that you can. Thanks.

Firstly Well done Baileybob for qualifying her lovely cob!!! Got to say its not an experience I want to repeat. Yes! Huge well done Baileybob! Not sure if you were in the odds or evens (we were in evens) but I too was appalled at the behaviour of some competitors-apart from the trotting when we were asked to canter, someone pulled their cob up in front of me when we were told to gallop on up the long side I'm afraid I just let him go & undertook them in front of the judges but didnt really have much choice I think SFAS should consider adding another venue & date to ease the class numbers-I thought it became a bit shambolic towards the end of the day, Another one who probably wouldnt do this show again as it is

Thanks for that it look as though shp were perhaps favoured, wish I had gone to watch but forgot that it was on!!! If anyone knows what ponies are called please can they give details though I am sure the results will either be on Search for a star website or in the Horse and Hound sometime soon.

We couldn't go this yr..Exams, but did go last year.. last year ours was pulled in top in pony class, but blew it on individual. I felt the judging was fair and the correct ponies that had given the mannerly show and were to type were placed. The judges even asked my daughter to go to another venue to try again...from what I am reading from this year you just sound like BAD LOSERS....and it wouldn't put us off from trying again - if we get the chance!

what would put me off is when you see people in these competions that are breaking the rules. as they produce horses and gain finically. were the true ameature works or goes to school and puts all the hard work in and doesnt get professional help!!

Not a bad loser I love my horse and no-ones opinion on him willchange mine! What I didnt like was the organisation and the dangerous situations in the ring. Im sorry if you think a horse that kicks another competitor should be allowed to stay but I dont! Amateur or not!
Just giving my opinion on the show - Its a fabulous thing for those that qualified and I am honestly happy for the people that won and wish them all the best at Hoys!!!
One thing I will say and some of you may be able to agree or disagree about this but some people on the ringside said that this was the busiest of all the qualifiers - so possibly the up and coming ones wont be as bad - never been so dont know!
Dont want my comments to put anyone off going - but I do resent being called a bad loser when I went and celebrated with the winner after the class!
My horse is amazing, behaved perfectly and I couldnt ask for anything else and never would, My mum did suggest I sell him for something flashier I have always wanted a riding horse but I never would I think the world of that beast Job horse or not!!!

This qualifer is always the busiest as I think the others are always further south. I think those that went here used to go and try again at Arena uk but they have dropped that venue this year I think

Post by dizzydora on Jun 10, 2009 13:27:43 GMT
Yes Osbaldeston has always been one of the busiest venues as it is the only one up north. Arena UK isnt a venue this year with the next most northern venue being Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire and that is the last qualifying show on 16th Aug.
