who was the judge today at osbaldeston? Richard Ramsey in the afternoon .. found judging to be a little disappointing with quality, manners and way of going not necessarily taken into account in the pony class

I watched the racehorse class and the judging was spot on - IMO of course - and absolutely fab grey won. Didn't manage to stay for the rest of the afternoon but a lot there as they were splitting the classes. ;D

Who rode the horse that was second in the RoR?

Heather Rothwell was 2nd in RoR class. I agree with Big Mama on the judging of the SP/SHP class, couldn't really follow it!

How many were forward in the RoR?

The racehorse class was judged by Liz Rothwell I think - don't quote me - Think there was twenty odd forward as was split - my respect to all competitors in this class as there really wasn't a bad one among them ;D

Have always found it hard to follow in sp/shp class. Without opening a huge can of worms or taking anything away from anyone I think that it might be an idea to try a change of judge, it's been the same person since it first started so maybe a fresh pair of eyes would be good?

I had some VERY strange feedback when I did it on my 143shp about 7/8yrs ago. Attempted it again when I moved onto a SRT in 2004, we were pulled in as the 1st SP and she was (not just me being biased) by far the best quality in the first 6 they pulled in initially, we blew our show as my horse decided to jump a puddle of wee but they were torn whether to drop me down the line, 1 of them wanted me through but put me down to 7th but was told to go to the next venue and try again. I found that the more RC type ponies went through on both times I had a go so decided not to bother again. Haven't paid much attention to it since then.

Please can someone clarify
if someone has rode for a producer (a well known one) in the past 6 years, worked for a producer, bought a horse off a different professional producer 6 months before the search for a star class, who has had a placing at HOYS the year before(the producer not horse) and has received money for schooling a horse for showing purposes only and being payed to school the horse at a show, and giving showing lessons, can they compete search for a star?
i ask this as i'm not sure of the rules, i mean a proffessional showing producer qualified a hack in 2007, and nothing was done about that so i'm confused
thanks in advance

I thought it was for true amateurs - I also spotted 2 riders in the go round for SP/SHP who rode at RI in last 2 years - didn't think this was allowed either

I've never done the class so not entirely sure but don't think RIHS counts for the rider or owner. I think the rider hasn't to have ridden at HOYS and the owners haven't to have owned a horse thats been to HOYS. The pony isn't to have qualified for HOYS/RIHS before 1st March in current year.

Rules taken from the website.
3. Any RIDER or OWNER within the following categories is exempt from competing in or entering an animal in Search for a Star. (a) judges registered within 2 years of the competition date with any showing association, organisation or breed society. (b) anyone who produces or schools show horses or ponies for financial remuneration. (c) Anyone who has ridden, exhibited or owned a horse in any show class at Horse of the Year Show since and including 1997. 4. The HORSE or PONY being exhibited must not be produced in a professional showing yard although may have been purchased from a professional before Jan 2009. However, it must meet all other qualification criteria.

In 2006 i did SFAS with my 15hh shp at Arena UK and i came 4th and was the highest placed shp, the top 3 were all sp. I have to say though that i was very pleased with how the judges were and i found them to be very helpful and poilte. They took the time at the end of every class to speak to the competitors who had questions and they gave them advice. I spoke to them and they told me that there was nothing to improve or change about my horse, the way it went or our turnout but just to keep trying as on the day the ones they preffered happened to be show ponies. i didnt do any more venues because of expense as none were near me and that was my last year for that class. I was thrilled with getting 4th and being the highest placed shp and i will do SFAS again with another horse because i thought it was a very good experience. It is a very difficult class to judge as you have the 2 different types in one class and one of each type doesnt qualify which is maybe something that should be looked at for future ones. I support SFAS fully though ;D
