Bit tricky to hand a rosette back as it would be an insult to the judge! However, what a shame for the little girl who should have won the nursery. My daughter has in the past pointed out to a judge that she had a pole when in the rosettes line up and clears not pulled ahead of her!

There's quite a few older girls showing on the northern routes and yorkshire shows that throw their rosettes on the floor. I'm not talking about 12 year olds but 16-21's. Isn't that usually poor losers who haven't been given the red one as opposed to being given a higher placing than they think they deserve

Just to clarify .....my post seems to have been read out of context.
I was NOT having a go at Jane Webber, the judge or anyone connected with either of them!
The point i was trying - maybe not clearly (!), to make, is that showing is a subjective sport where we put the power to one or two people on that particular day to do and chose who and what they want. We all know that when we enter the ring. Judges on the "outside" arent always aware of all the facts etc that a judge has first hand.
I agree wholeheartedly with Trends. Jane Webber et al are all lovely and genuine people who strive to have their horses going and looking their best.
My post certainly was not meant as critical - but was said to contradict some of the previous defamatory posts made.

The Philanderer is an outstanding riding horse. From the ringside his spook and reluctance to gallop with the judge appeared to be enough to result in being dropped. The class wasn't the strongest and the third horse didn't go perfectly. If marks were used he would probably have stayed second as his conformation mark would have made up for the loss of marks from the ride judge. No fault on Jayne Webber, understandable result when analyzed but to spectators a little hard to swallow. Still the judge has the final decision and this was their decision on the day!!!

I personally thought it was a good large riding horse class - the fact that the qualifier passed to fifth, and there were lots of horses down the line/unplaced that went to HOYS last year.
I too watched the class intently and thought that on the whole the ride judge penalised bad rides (Intrepid, who incidentally looked to give a much safer ride than Philanderer. Intrepid was tense in it's trot but relaxed once cantering and went well) and bought good rides up (the eventual third looked to have given a very safe, if not forward going, ride.
Fact is the ride judge looked like she didn't dare breath on The Philanderer, let alone relax and enjoy it. I don't think it was the horse's reluctance to gallop - Jayne could hardly pull him up in the go round! Yes, his conformation is super, but no-one could say his ride was good enough to stay put yesterday!

Overbent nobody disputed anything a child was good enough to hand a rosette down to a more deserving pony and rider combination and i would be proud to see it happen again

i watched the small hack class this morning, and thought the judging was terrible. The judge kept the one she pulled in top despite it chucking its head in its show, she looked like hanging on to it when she rode it, second was not bad but nothing special, third was very flat. The judge seemed to have missed some quality animals, some that went beautifully. I could not believe it when she kept the top one and second in the same order in the final line up and then a 3rd which was not expected, she then asked the rest of the entrants to just line up,what a ridiculous class, so some horses that were naughty ended up above onces that went perfect, I have never seen anything tlike this before, so after third placing asking the others to just line up. What a disappointment for the last Royal Show. I didn't stay for the larges. How embarrassed she must feel.

Sorry my mistake!!! It was the small class that wasn't so strong. But my comments still are relevant. I would personally have dropped him but I wasn't judging!! Sometimes I feel judges lay themselves wide open to criticism! There were certainly horses capable of beating him on the day, BUT NOT IN THE EYES OF THE TWO JUDGES THAT JUDGED ON WEDNESDAY!!! There's always another day and another show and other judges!!!

Overbent nobody disputed anything a child was good enough to hand a rosette down to a more deserving pony and rider combination and i would be proud to see it happen again However good the intentions, to do that is very disrespectful of the judges decision, and more than a little bit patronising to the person you give the rosette to! Sorry, IMO you should just smile sweetly, thank the judge for their time and chalk it up to experience.

What a disappointment for the last Royal Show. I wasn't there but surely if there were 6 rosettes to give out she should have pulled in 6 horses before asking the others to just come in, in any order? If I'd paid whatever the entry fee was I would be quite peeved.
