Hi, do you get lessons on the mare? is she like this when ridden by anyone else? I take it she doen't have any muscular or teeth probs?

HI, i haven't had lessons for the past year or so but im having one on sat, so should be helpful!
Her Teeth and back are fine along with her tack, sometimes she softens nicely other times she just locks her neck in stubborness!
I long reined her yesterday and lunged her with to reins, she worked extremely well and soften to the inside nicely.
Just wondered what other exercise's i could do. Also have done the 6 circle exercise with her which also helps.

I dont think horses lock their necks in stubborness.
I would get her checked again, by a different back specialist. Check it without the saddle on and with the saddle on. Check it with rider on too. Some riders are crooked and create tension in the horse, who then stiffens to evade the crookedness of rider.
No amount of schooling will get a horse to flex, if he/she has a physical block, or pain.

I would get teeth, back, saddle checked and ensure I had a nice well fitting snaffle (check with the dentist the best one). If I am assured all is fine, then I would know the problem lies with my own riding/position/posture and lack of flexibility.
A good BHS qualified instructor will quickly ascertain the areas for improvement and away your go. Be prepared for a lot of hard work and patience and regular lessons.

Thanks for your help! Will see how my lesson goes on fri! Hopefully this is due to my posistion rather than being a problem with her!

Hi all , i had a wonderful lesson yesterday so good in fact that i had another one first thing this morning!
After years of tears and hard work with my mare i have finally found a instructor that found a way in!
I have always had problems with pally being argumentative and temperamental and throwing tantrums! So many times i have had people tell me that i should give up on her as i give her so much and she gives me so little in return!
But today and yesterday i feel like i have had a new lease of life.
I had a new instructor come out who fell in love with pally! She understood everything that she was throwing at me and said that all she was trying to do was have a conversation saying what do you want me to do mum i dont unnderstand!
It wasn't that i wasn't making my aids clear it was that they were to clear and she found it confrontational! My new instructor popped on her and within minutes she was like a new horse!
She said that pally was very sensitive to every movement and that sometimes just thinking about the aid was enough to get her to respond. She said that i was trying to hard in my riding. I had to soften down every thing i done.
So i had to ride without hardly any contact or direct obvious aids and within minutes she became light and was useing her hind leg and steping through correctly, whilst lifting her shoulder! Oh my was i impressed this horse that had caused me so many tears was just asking me to be softer with my aids!
We have no more incorrect flexation and no hollowing of the back.
Dont get me wrong we still have a long way to go but have started to build an excellent foundation for what will hopefully be a very nice dressage horse!
Thanks all for your advice! x
