Just asking this for a friend as i don't know the answer!! When can you and can't you use them for showing? She has a 13yr old child who is about to do her first season proper showing, but isn't as of yet to confident using double reins. The classes she would be doing are shp, part bred arabs and maybe show pony. Unfortunately the pony can't do novices,so its straight in the deep end, otherwise she'd use her snaffle.

I would let the child use them for the first season until they feel comfortable using double reins. I used them on my 12.2 sp and practiced at home in double reins all the time. They don't always look the best but i doubt you would get penalised for them. Obviously i would aim to get onto double reins but in my opinion much better the pony goes well in split ones and the child feels safe and happy.

As a junior jockey she should be ok.... but would start getting them riding with 2 reins at home, as they definately don't look as elegant as double reins.

I think split reins are OK for teenies but a teenager may feel a bit of a wally in what we always called "baby reins". I would try with 2 but make sure they are nice and narrow so the child doesn't have too much of a handfull. Also it's quite good if the bridoon rein is notched so its easier to know which is which.

I have in the passed , some horses ie cob or hunters use double reins stiched together, so they look like double reins, but when the ride judge, rides them they dont catch the animal in the mouth.
So i suggest you get ordinary double reins and have then stiched where the child would be holding the reins so it gives the apperance of double riens.
I hope that all make sence.
