You just need a little time and persistance Keep the sessions short but regular to keep his attention.
If some thing didn't pay attention and found it difficult to be even remotely straight and square I would tackle it using the same ideas as I would if I was riding. It is trial and error really to see what works for each horse but this has worked for me with horses that swing themselves around or don't concentrate.
First of all if you have an arena with a wall/ fence set up a couple of poles (or planks if your worried about him stepping on them) about a metre away from the wall parallel to it. Walk him up between the poles and wall and first of all concentrate on him halting straight. You can then adjust him by pushing back on chest or easing forwards to ask to be sqaure. The poles stop him learning to swing away from you while you adjust him. Some animals will start to stay more square straight away as the poles funnel them into in halt. The poles also act as a distraction and can be used with planks on the floor at the front or back of the horse for extra control if needed. You can progress to a narrower space or move the planks into the middle of the arena with one on each side as the horse progresses.
Good luck!
