Lots of talk about the site being too quiet now - so what do all the members think. This is your chance to have a say.

Guests were always good at providing results as and when they happened, they had inside knowledge we had a right to share but quite rightly so they prefered to be annon because of retribution. Come back guests we need you info.

I think that some of the guests were very valuable for their contributions and respect their right to anonymity, but there were those who abused the system and I understand how difficult it must be for mods to keep track of those who caused trouble. It was certainly a more entertaining site with guests posting, but I'm not sure it was more productive. I think both ways have their advantages and drawbacks

I think it is quite boring without guests. I know sometimes they could be very controversial and sometimes pretty mean but they often provided a good talking point. And if your name is mentioned then that usually means you are doing very well in the showing world. And if the criticism really gets to you, then simply steer away from this website.

I agree with Nikki's comments. I like to hear people's opinions even if they are controversial. Some people seem to want to slap down any criticism that is made, but showing is subjective and one person's good judging is a mystery to someone else.

I ran a forum for a while and tried something similar with banning guests. All I found was that people started to have two logins one as a Mr Nice and one as a Mr Honest/sometimes nasty. It also slowed down the number of visitors to the site considerably. Just thought I'd add my thoughts on the matter.

There are so many other forums out there that have a members only policy. This forum was different in that it provided a platform for honest open opinions (and yes sometimes nasty comments). I think if perhaps you just deleted the downright nasty comments immediately before they get discussed in any detail they would occur less & less.

Not just the guests who are no longer posting, there seems to be fewer members using the site as well. Used to be the best site on the internet, but now? Boring.................

I thought they added interest and spice, and as long as the moderators kept it in order, I felt it was OK. There's something lost without them.

Is it boring because the information & discussion has become less heated, bit*hy & back stabbing? I don't believe anybody with anything constructive to say has left Horse Gossip, some of the threads over the last few days have been quite controversial. I also don't think we will really see how much difference the absence of guests makes until the season really kicks off. Whilst freedom of speech is great having been on the receiving end of some very nasty guests in the past & watched my friends be upset by comments also posted anonymously i think having to be a member is a good thing.

Unless you've been on the end of some of the nastiness on here from guests I don't think you understand what it means to have stuff written about you on a public site. Some of the topics have been interesting lately - peraps the site has run its course??

Some of the topics have been interesting lately - peraps the site has run its course?? I hear what you are saying but in all fairness I think the mods where on top of most the nastiness, and if we did miss something people would or could pm any one of us. In what way do you think the site has run its course?

I can understand where you are coming from - I've been the topic of a few nasty posts as well - but the way I see it is that there isn't really anything being said on here that isn't being said behind our backs anyway and, at least on here, you have a right of reply I would say that if the guests are reinstated then anyone is free to PM a mod when a topic gets out of hand. We try not to be too heavy-handed and if someone has managed to answer a critic honestly then that is IMO often the better way to put their gas at a peep than to delete their post!

It would seem by the voting that most of the members are also guests.

I would also like to add that I belong to another showing site where you have to be a member to post but anyone can read the discussion board. Basically it is very dull and dare I say it slightly incestuous as the small number of members obviously know each other and their ponies and just seem to have private and sometimes pretty trivial conversations. To a newcomer like me, I don't have a clue which animals they are referring to and I am just left with the thought why don't they just msm each other?
I would hate to see the Horse Gossip forum go that way.

I think by the number of votes polled shows just how flat and bland this site has become since it has been members only. I know there were some people who took quite a bit of flack from guests but they were entitled to ask the mods to remove those posts. I have kept a lookout at the number of people viewing the forum and it has dropped considerably since registration became compulsory. Come on Admin bring back the guests there is too much valuable info being missed and useful opinions of judges calibre, this game is too expensive to waste money on entries if the judges arent up to it

Agree with Junk (but don't know how to quote it!) that members also post as guests. I did, and used several names. I was never bit*hy in the least, but just didn't want to be recognised by anyone I knew. Why not? Must be paranoid! Most of us want to be anonymous; otherwise we would all use our real names. Let us come back as guests, please. Also, I'm always a bit worried about the Mods looking up who I am. Like I said, must be paranoid!

Just to add to this thread. Off the board I have had numerous pm’s and emails requesting that guests be allowed to post in the lounge area. Some of these are from members some are from guests that do not wish to become members. Thanks to those who have expressed an opinion and could be bothered contacting me. Normally I would have discussed making the lounge a registered user area only with the mods, but in this case I decided to go it alone. I did say in my original post that I would leave it for a while without the guests being able to post in the Lounge area. That was to assess what sort of impact no guests would have on the site and Lounge area. Without guests it has made it easier for us as mods to police but I think that without the contribution from some of the guests the site is not as it should be or was originally set up to be. We will leave the poll running for a day or so to give people a chance to vote on what to do next and also the guests can give their point of view in the thread started by someone in the General off topic discussion area. If it is the case that guests will be allowed to contribute to the Lounge area the mods will lay out a set of guidelines and anything out of those guidelines will be removed no questions asked.I know we won’t be able to please all the people but hopefully we can please most of you.

Oldie I can assure you and everyone else on this site that the mods cannot see who anyone else is. As Admin I have access to all ISP and email details. I do not and would not disclose this information to anyone. The only time this information would be passed on is if instructed to do so by a court of law.

I agree it's much duller. This site was previously reffered to as the "bit*hy" web-site. As someone said above this was the place to hear what other people were already saying behind your back. I agree it can be pretty hurtful but it also allows you to give an answer and put people straight. It's also about airing different opinons. I think it's great to hear other opinions even if you don't agree. There are plenty of other nicey, nicey showing sites it's good that this one is a bit different.

Nicey nicey sites are boring filled with posts of people saying well done who really wants to read them, agree should be cautious re personal attacks but there is a balance between this and bland sanitised controlled boards that just have no spark. The internet was supposed to be about freedom we should protect that there is far too much control in everyday life without bland dull message boards - it will just die or fossilize if it continues without the guests.
