I went to Derby horse sales this weekend, wondering round feeling sorry for the poor horses and ponies there. All of a sudden I saw a really poor section c colt in really bad nick very weak. A rough note on the pen said its prefix and its was the same as my yearling colt. I phoned the stud where I got him from and told her about it and it turns out it is full brother to my colt but a year older. I finshed up buying it the ring for peanuts and somehow managed to get it home. I t drank 4 big buckets of water in 4 hours and ate hay like it had never had anything for weeks.
It has only got one testicle dropped but if need be I will get it operated on (advise on this would be appreciated). It looked such a mess and just as thought it was giving up on life very dull eyes.
I have wormed him and yesterday had him tied up and pulled his mane and tidied him up and he was an absolute angel just loved the attention. By this morning he has got the sparkle back in his eyes had pulled all the rugs down, helped me to muck out and was generally entertaining.
It just gave me a warm glow to think that I had got him out of the dealer circuit going round and round to markets all over the country.
Will keep everyone inforemd of his progress

Just out of interest did you ask the Stud by which means and ownership he had ended up at the Derby sales in such a poor (mentally if not physically) state?
Sounds like he is a very lucky pony and has found fallen on his feet with you as his new owner.

hiya, thanks for all the good messages, he is called Cheshmere Duke but we have named him William, spoke to lorraine at Cheshmere who said he went to a private home at weaning, she was so upset that he had ended up there but no-one know when you sell a pony what circumstances happens. He has been wormed and had a bath and looks so much better already he is such a kind pony but cringes if you go up to him quickly as though he has had lots of beatings. I was a bit worried yesterday as he was so stiff walking about and I wondered if he had a back injury but is a lot better today. I was told that the dealer who sold him sometimes keeps them on a lorry for sometimes a week between sales as it keeps them quiet when they get to the next market. As I said to firends if I have to give him away it didnt matter and he seems so gratefull for everything you do for him - maybe in a few weeks he will turn into a colt devil but anything would be better than the pathetic heap he was. He has a beautiful head lets hope the body catches up soon.

Well done Skint - stories like this restore my faith in humanity. The first thought that sprang into my mind is that he was sold on because of his one tesicle as it can be a pricey op that some are unprepared to pay for. Good luck with him and keep us updated of his progress.

Just to let you know about Williams progress, he has almost doubled his weight has a really shiney coat and generally feels well. I do think that he had been kept in all the time because he was very stiff but now he goes in the field and bucks and jumps all the time.
Even better had the vet yesterday and William one ball is now Willie two balls so is being castrated next thursday. It will be so much better for him as he is very colty and worries when he can see the mares in a field nearby.
He is turning into a nice pony and I really have taken to him. Once I can suss out how to post photographs on here I will put some before and after ones on.

well done for your kindness - all the best for the future but your posts regarding how dealers treat these animals makes me sick -- where the hell are all the welfare societies? Why is this able to happen in today's climate of protecting everything from everybody? Why are these sales allowed to continue? Its disgusting. I know of one man (see my threads on missingponies/worthless passports) who can apparently only go to a few "select" sales as he has been warned off all the properly run ones - he is selling animals constantly most of which dont belong to him to other ringside dealers who then push them through the ring. Where are all the Inland Revnue people? Why cant these people be stopped? The thought of that poor pony being on a wagon for that length of time...dear God.

The welfare people are too busy worrying about the going at shows and whether your pony is to fat. Time they got off their backsides and went out where the real problems are.

Great news. Well done.
Fat's easy and is the in thing, real welfare issues are much more difficult. Welfare opts for easy.

Well he is showing how gratefull he is at present by biting me as much as poss but he knows its wrong cos he looks like butter would not melt in his mouth after he has done it. Hopefully cutting him next week will cure him of that. I think that it is so sad that he was so neglected that it took him 3 weeks to move properly - he still eats twice as much as the others and can be a bit possessive of his hard feed but I suppose that can be expected. I think there is a lovely c under everthing but will take time to emerge.

William and his sppendages have parted compnay this morning - thank god, its so long since I had one cut, is it worth giving him a bit of bute cos he must be so sore. One was a "walls Whopper the other was the size of a walnut. I must have a very strange 13 yrs old daughter she rang me to say could I save them for her to have alook at when she gets home - so they are in a plastic bag at present.
Any hints and tips gratefully appreciated

Def bute. A whole sachet tonight and tomorrow morning. Half a sachet am and pm for a couple of days then half a sachet each evening for another couple of days. Important to reduce any swelling as quickly as possible. We turned ours out on the manege several times a day for about an hour each time an he was out all day within no time. Movement reduces the swelling and this will assist healing. This was mid November so we had no worries about flies - just keep an eye out for fly blow!!! It may be wise to get something from the vet you could spray the area with??

Thanks for that- he is healing nicely and has gone out today with some spray from the vet to protect against flies. I thought he would be stiff and sore - No chance went up the road like a maniac - bucking and farting -I ended up shutting the gate with his legs around my ears. I cannot wait for his castrated hormones to kick in
