As you will have read in another thread "my good deed" I have aquired a 2 year old colt who unfortunatly only has one testicle dropped.
I dont think he is strong enough yet for an op, but would appreciate other peoples experiences on this. If it hasnt dropped at 2 do you think it will be unlikly too now.
I have had a price of £500 for the op being carried out, is that high or cheap.

About average I would say, we too have a mature pony with only one testical and £500 was what we were quoted 2 years ago. Also beware there is no guarentee that the vets will find the 2nd testical, this may be as small as a pea or they may not be able to find it at all. CTS on here has had this problem with a sec A and two ops later the vets still haven't found it. I believe the pony in question is now a companion to geldings.

Just a thought...do you have a teaching hospital nearby? If so, could you tell them this boy's story and see if they will do a deal for you on the op. Interesting for students, and helpful to you and this pony.
My sister had a colt with the same problem. He was operated on at around 2 and a half years at a teaching hospital and op was a success. Think cost was around £500 though.
Good luck.

We have the same problem with one of ours. He is 4 now and will have the op this year. Although we did have a friend who dropped his at 3, they 'encouraged' it by fielding him next to mares during the summer. £500 is about the right sort of price and as long as he is no trouble I would wait until he is a lot stronger as it can be a tough operation.

we bought a lovely sec c from travellers at a sale (he was too nice to leave) we bought him as a gelding but we were always weary of his back end for some reason he never did anything though about a year later a testacle appeared we had him straight to the vet they found the second one near his chest and it was cancerous. (the vet thinks that he was booted to get rid of them to sell him) he recovered well and is cost £400 but that was about 7 years ago i think the cost will vary depending how quickly they find it

Yes i have a pony that has now been thought two Ops but no sign of the missing testical. we are now waiting for specialists to come and see him. There is no sign of the missing Tubbing or anything. we think what ever is left is about the size of the top of your thumb.

I have had 2 C colts now that have retained testicles. 1 was given to me for that reason and i had him injected with hormones and kept him slim and put him near mares but nothing worked so a friend of mine had him, took him to a local teaching hospital and he was gelded for around £400. The other i bred and he had them as a foal but then retained them at weaning. He got very riggy but still nothing dropped so i booked him in to be castrated, when they opened him up they were sitting up near his vital organs and could of strangulated his kidneys at any time. That cost £800 10years ago...

Sorry for my ignorance, but how can testicles get lost all the way to the chest or vital organs? In boys (the human kind) if they don't drop, they're never all that far up. If you get my gist!

I've has 2 colts with a retained testicle castrated. The op was about £200. each time. The missing testicle was found in each case, but obviously underdeveloped, and it took my vet quite a while to find each of them.

The main cost of the operation is the anaesthetic & vets time, therefore it is really difficult for any vet to give more than a rough estimate as nobody knows how long it might take to find the little b---ars!!!! Having just had a 3 year old colt, with 2 balls, castrated in the normal way, i am expecting a bill of about £250 for that which makes £500 sound pretty reasonable to me. Your little guy sounds like he is due for some luck though so i really hope that all goes well & your kindness is repaid with a small bill

I was told by my vet the cheapest anywhere to get this done was £800. Might have a word with my vet again!!! Re where are they. I know they can almost be up to kidneys, but can't see how they can get in their chest? ?
