Help, I've entred the Smartest On Parade class at Ponies Uk South Show and haven't got a clue what the judge will be looking for!! Any ideas or experiences of this class would be much appreciated.

A friend did this at PUK winter champs a few years ago. Think it's a bit like tack and turn out with a ridden display. They look closely at how your are turned out, clean tack, no dirt on bottom of boots etc and the turnout of the pony and then you do a ridden display - like a simple show
Hope this helps

We did this at puk summer champs last year. You go in individually and one judge looks at your turnout (under stirrup treads, under girth, bottom of boots, nooks of d saddle, very thorough) and mark you out of fifty. You then do an individual show, i can't remember if its set anymore or not, then they mark your show out of fifty also. Once everyone has done they call you all in to the ring and line you up and read out the numbers for the placing. We found it a useful class for fizzy ponies to give them a good warm up without working them up as their no going around together. hopes this helps

From memory, I think the Smartest on Parade individual shows have to contain certain elements, eg extended canter across the diagonal, so it's probably important to look up the PUK rulebook to check. I take it the schedule doesn't actually say what is required?

I think the show you are expected to do is in the schedule, serpentine etc. I have done this class although not at PUK South. The only time we did it, at a SWPA show, the Judge did not look at the turn out at all i.e there was no looking under stirrups, saddle flaps etc, she just looked at them when they came to her before the start of the display.

happen to have 2007 PUK rule book on desk - phase one 50 marks turnout of pony/rider phase 2 - 50 marks, freestyle show not longer than 2 mins to show halt, walk on long rein, ordinary trot serpentine, canter circle both reins and an extended canter on the diagonal.
We did our first one a couple of weeks ago and my daughter thought it great fun, but I havent done a BTO in years so was hard pressed to clean the tack to that standard again!!

I did one of these at a small show, just to give my pony a warm up as she is quite fizzy- one bit advise I'd give is practice timing your show as I went over the time-limit and had marks deducted!

practice timing your show as I went over the time-limit and had marks deducted! Ah, yeah, I remember that bit too - I stewarded for some of these at PUK Summer Champs a few years ago and we had a stopwatch and had to tell the judge once the time was up and he/she wasn't permitted to judge from that point on.
