Thanks to the mods letting us back in I can ask for advice on a problem that occurred yesterday to someone I know.
She came and borrowed my trailer for moving ponies to another friends house, HOWEVER when she got back it turned out to be a covert mission to get back two Sec A ponies she had loaned out for breeding....she has had terrible difficulties in contacting the loan home, couldnt get straight answers from anyone so decided to swoop to the home and pick them up.
Needless to say they werent there and the reasons given were a) one had had colic in January and been put down and b) the other was at stud. The loaner would not give the name of the stud nor of the knackerman, the owner still has the original green passports and both ponies are well bred Sec A's. The police were called and they tried to be helpful but nothing was resolved. The loaner in question has had serious run ins before with the police over questionable tack sales so it is feared the ponies have been sold on.
But with what form of passport I wonder? They are only young ponies (4 and 6), now what can one do to track them down? I gather there was no loan agreement on paper...what would you do to try and track them down? I cant help feeling sorry for the people who have unknowingly bought "stolen" ponies for want of a better word....the WPCS have put on block on the ponies details etc as from yesterday.
Now I hope this isnt too contentious an issue to bring up on our first day back into the fold!!!
But it does raise the question about .......y passports - what real good they do especially when you can just create one yourself.

Would a national horse magazine, eg H&H, maybe do an article on her behalf? Are the ponies microchipped?

I've just heard they tracked down the knacker man who surprise surprise has never heard of the people, nor have they put down a pony for them either at anytime. I gather the owner is going to put a post on Stabletalk (??) to try and find them..
Regarding registering a pony now with the relevant societies do you have to provide DNA or this just for stallions? I am wondering if, as the loaners have a licensed Sec A stallion, they could "create" paperwork to say their stallion sired it on a mare they own so getting a "false" passport for the two missing ponies?
She (the owner) seemed very mad and fiesty so I am sure she wont let the matter rest!

What an awful situation for your friend to be in. Like guestless said, maybe H&H would run an article? I'm sure their news department would be very interested.

If all they want is an ordinary passport they can get them anywhere, someone does them at most horse sales, no questions asked. I would think its harder to fake breed papers

Would it be poss to put some photos on the site, or a very good description, we can all keep our eyes peeled, what area are we talking about, would it be possible to name and shame these people then perhaps the new owners might come forward.
this is so sad for the real owner of these ponies.
definitely try H & H.

Regarding the breed papers, if you try and register a filly or colt, you have to have DNA sample if they are over 4.
If they are geldings you just have to have a covering certificate...however even that would be difficult, as the WCPS would question a covering certificate that didn't run in order.
It is so crap that people would do something like this.....I agree lets have the pictures and names then at least it could be publicised....
Definately go for an article in H&H send it to the news editor...

VERY IMPORTANT - UPDATE PLEASE READ (Sorry for the capitals!)
There will be photos put on Horsequest either today or tomorrow regarding these two missing Sec A's.
The rightful owner has discovered an article printed in the Feb/March issue of Central Horse News reference "Elegance Stud" shows a picture of a LR pony called Elegance Miss Dynamite. This pony is actually Southwaite Choice. If anyone knows of this pony whereabouts please can they get in touch with the number on Horsequest.
The ponies will have been sold from a yard in Callow End, Worcs.
The police and Horsewatch are now involved in trying to trace these ponies.
The rightful owner is mainly concerned that the people responsible for illegally selling the ponies are brought to justice - if the ponies are in safe happy homes she will probably be happy to leave them with their new owners IF they can help in stopping these people from continuing the same offences over and over again.
Mods - hope this is OK for you to post. Many thanks.
