can anyone help. 3 weeks ago i went to turn out my son's new minature pony to find one of his back hocks double the size it should be, phoned vet and by the time she got there it was redhot. she thought he must of pulled it and put him on antibiotics and bute. the hock has gone down but not completely , spoke to the vet again on friday and she now thinks it could be his stifle but i'm not convinced he is lame but still plays around as a 6 month baby does. he has been on box rest for the last 3 weeks until i spoke to the vet and she said to go back to turning him out. would some sort of support on his leg help? wen he was turned out he came back in with it swollen again so i have now kept him in again. after speaking to his breeder he thought that it sounded more like he had a hairline fracture ? please any help and advice appreciated as my son is now thinking we will have to put his pony to sleep

I would be asking the vet to start doing a full investigation - xrays, etc. If you read my thread 2 or 3 below yours, "swollen hock after a fall" you will see that a hock bandage was used, plus tensolvet and BUTE. The swelling had completely gone in 1 week. The horse is now back in full work. Where your little pony's hock has got bigger with exercise, def think further investigations need to be done Good luck xx

I think investigations now in order. That isn't to worry you but to reassure you that any treatment (ie to box rest or turn out, etc) is definitely the right one for that injury.

have spoke to the vet today about x rays and she wants to do some on his stifle/ knee but surely if the swelling/ heat is in his hock its there she needs to be x raying? asked her also about a hock stocking/ bandage and she's never heard of them .

The hock bandages wont be small enough for your pony unfortunately. The smallest just about fits my section c!!!!!!! Do they not realise we love small ponies as much as big ones and want the best for them! Echo Lovepink though. Tubigrip is the way to go.

i thought about tubergrip but not having seen a hock bandage i didn't know if it would work the same, i asked the vet about putting some on and she said it wouldn't work as it his stifle joint but i'm sure its his hock, surely swelling and pain is were the injury is instead of the injury being in a different area? ?

good news sort of . our little chap spent the day at the vets today to have his x rays and there is no breaks or abnormalities on the x rays so great news there, but they don't know what is causing the problem, we now think he may now have pulled or torn a ligament or cartlidge so he now back on small dose of bute and has to be walked out every day. so fingers crossed

Thats great news! I had a horse years ago, with a nasty hock injury. It took about 3 months to go - but he too had scan and xrays all clear. He was perfectly sound in the end and no swellling left. Just took time.
I still think the tubigrip will help to reduce the swelling and cant really do any harm.
Pleased you have had good news! xx

just thought i'd update you on progress. we have been turning him out in the day and bringing him in at night and we are trying to walk him out everyday but he must be feeling better as walk is the wrong word, he canters and leaps around at the side of you, his hock is still swollen but fingers crossed in time it will go down

my friend had a pony who had the biggest hock you would ever see, cold hosing, ice tight, and a pressage hock bandage, ok it took some weeks but you would not know he had injured it.

Dmso, tensolvet. Tubigrip and a cross (figure 8) way of bandagin the hock. bandage right down his leg and hopefully it will stay on! Hocks are funny things, so give it more time as it may come up again. Im sorry, but have had lots of experience with this. If it doesnt go down its not the end of the world as there are treatments for the swelling, but time is the best healer. Good Luck.
