Why is it that no judges ever seem to give a New Forest the chance? It's always Connie,Connie,Connie and there are some very nice and consistent New Forest ponies on the circuit! I have seen many New Forests perform against the Connie's this year but it is almost as if judges are scared they will show them up at big finals!!! We need to promote New Forests Any one got a favorite New Forest? that they think performs consistently but always seems to just miss out? Mine is a New forest I have seen "Blackwell Sea Breeze".

So how do you explain that the first HOYS qualifying place for 2007 has been taken by a new forest?

haha yes but last year how many new forests went compared to connies?

There is a larger proportion of connies in the ring so really you would expect more connies to qualify.

I totally agree with you hooves!!! I have also seen some brilliant New forests over the past few seasons....admitedly, some equally bad ones but it does always seem to "swing in the connies favor" Not sure about the new forest you mentioned. Is it yours? Do you have any results? I like "Farriers Fingerprint" after seeing him at NPS summer Championships

Yes there are fewer NF's in the ring but at the end of the day this seems to make judges almost assume they aren't good enough to warrant the placings....It's almost as if the Connie is the safe bet!! As there are fewer, why not give the good ones the opportunity?

As there are fewer, why not give the good ones the opportunity? That really isn't how it works, you can't go...ooh thats a new forest i will give them extra marks just because its a new forest. It has to be what performs best on the day and it appears last year the connies simply outperformed better than the new forests on the qualifying days.

yes I do agree with you, but surely you have watched the classes and on one or two occasions thought a nf went as well as if not better than a connie?

How many of the Connies and the D's move straight? Good luck to all worthy New Forests. Hope more travel and represent their breed at HOYS & Olympia this year. Go Foresters Go

Yes and every so often that does happen, like when Farriers Fingerprint won the evening performance at NPS summer!!! It is brilliant for the breed when that happens but sometimes, I do feel that NF's are a little hard done by!!

and the highest placed New Forest is a good rosette but sometimes its just not as good as a Hoys ticket!!!!

There are plenty of good New Forests in their home county. Sadly - although lucky for the connies - few of them travel North to qualifiers. More should go to Newbury, Windsor, etc. they'd be made very welcome.

Sorry but I do not agree, we have NFs and certainly do not feel that we have been hard done too....no matter what the breed a pony that is a good example of its breed and type, coupled with good confromation etc.. will always stand out. Connies are not a threat to us...

Prediction: !! Give it two years and EVERYBODY will want a New Forest!! It is happening just now with HiPos, the Connie fad will die away within a few years (and maybe we will see some realistic prices for them too) so jump on board now whilst prices are sensible!!

yes but some equally bad new forests get placed as if the judge has thought we have to have a tokennew forest to keep the new forest people happy.
owning a connie that went to olympia i still remember the day he qualified and an awful new forest was placed third and it really took the biscuit considering it was the only one and all the other connies went exceptionally well.

At the end of the day the best pony should go forward what ever the breed. Sadly breeds do seem to go in and out of fashion, several years ago it was Dartmoor ponies, although personally they are my favourite

A New Forest won the Open Restricted Final at BSPS Championships 2 weeks ago.....it was the only one in the class! So it beat all the Connies......... I do however think that on laws of averages, as there are fewer NF competing in Olympias & HOYS the odds are greatly reduced...... I too hope to see more than 1 NF qualify for HOYS this year.....as that would mean that mine hadn't

Did anyone hear about PUK winter champs in the Llanarth Ridden Finals? Apparently (so I have heard) the winner of the conn/NF section was a bay Connie but the judge thought it was a NF as they awareded the cup for the highest placed connie to the 2nd placed pony in the evening performance. It wasnt until the owners of the 1st placed pony objected and said that the cup should be theirs that the mistake was realised.
Surely the judges should know the difference between a NF and a Connie - it obviously wasnt a good Connie if the judge thought it was a NF so should it still have won?!!!

:-XProblem is . . . if a Connie isn't grey, it's possibly not immediately obvious that it is a Connie and, not a Newfie! To some people. Especially in an area where there's not that many Newfies.

I have the opposite problem...my NF is Dun...and so many people think it is a connie......

Yes i heard that too about the llanarth. The bay connie that won has been around for many seasons and has had mediocre results. I think it was a surprise to many people when it won.

I have a grey NF and a bay Connie and they often get mistaken. Judges really should know how to tell the difference though, as the neck and heads are set on differently between the breeds.

i got sick of judges asking what breeding my "connie" was, infact he was a good example of a nf but as he was grey & normally the only nf in the ring he got lumped as a connie.

IMO Nf owners need to be more adventurous. there are a few we see around but thats it. the more they get them out then the more known they will become and more publicity for the breed. also surely the more they are out the better they will go

i have shown Connis for last 5 years or so and there are hardly any NFs in most of my classes ( i am based up north ) but do seem to be more as you get further south . I also think that some judges get confused especially if they are grey / bay ...i find it amusing ! One judge at Cheshire pulled a bay conni 2nd and commented on what a lovely Nf it was .... the owner did not correct her and it stayed 2nd !! She was prob too scared to correct her in case she was dropped !!
