Has anyone else had this problem? I have a mare four weeks off foaling- everything is tickety boo. I have another mare who I bought earlier this year who has started to display signs of being in foal too. Yesterday morning she had bagged up, this had gone down considerably by evening. The mare has not been near any entires within the required timeframe and was in season last summer. The in-foal mare is this mares best friend and I am wondering if she is copying her symptoms? 99% of me is convinced she is having a phantom pregnancy- the other 1% is waiting for the vet to get back to me!!! Any comments??

We had a mare who we constantly struggled to get in foal. She used to have phantom pregnancies everytime she missed. We only ever managed to get 4 foals from her, one she had in a gourse bush, one was born premature and sadly died, one was perfect and the last two weeks after giving birth we lost the mare herself, foal grew up to be perfect.
The vets could never understand what was wrong with her and sometimes nature is a funny place.
I would definitely say our mare is feeling left out and having experienced it before I would be careful the mare doesnt try to steal the foal away from the other mare when it is born.

One of my mares started bagging up a bit when my infoal mare was due last year - as you mention with your mares, the two were friends. I separated them and she went back to normal quite quickly.

A bit of an update folks- after I heard from her previous owner that bagging up was something she had done before, I rather put it out of my mind. However, I whipped her up to the vets this morning as she was really starting to lose her topline and after a quick rummage he confirmed that she is indeed in foal, she is probably due in June and will have been bagged up in anticipation for two months! Is this a record?

My mare bagged up for 6 weeks or so before she foaled, she never did have a big udder when feeding her foal

Hey folks, another update on the phantom pregnancy that wasn't. She presented us with a really beautiful bay colt this morning, mum and baby doing well- hopefully a HOYS winner of the future (ever the optimist!). Anyone any ideas for a name?

I actually think Phantom of the Opera, or something that plays on that is a great idea!! Or something like Ghost Surprise with a prefix... I think "Ghost" would be lovely as a stable name!

We have called him Scooby in the stable as we didn't have a Scooby (scooby Doo- Clue) that he existed for four months! In fact the poor little sod was galloping round the ring at Windsor three weeks ago! Like the theme of Phantom for a name I will try and post some piccy's as he is rather handsome. Mum is very proud and monitors his every move, they are now both exhausted and having some well earned rest....

Dad was a very forward yearling colt (who is now missing his manly bits) and he is by Strinesdale Matador, mum is by Prince of Darkness (TB) so hopefully he will be trotting round a showring in a few years!

Hee hee!!! We had the same little problem a few years ago!! The kids were looking after the ponies for the day and didn't tell us that our colt had "been playing" with one of the mares after they thought they "wanted to play" Ah the innoncence!!!!
