Hi all, my boy has always had really good feet but today I found a large crack in his hoof wall about 2cm from the coronet band and is full length of the outside of his off side hoof. Luckily theres no pain, lameness etc but it seems to have cropped up overnight and was wondering if all the snow could be a cause? If it had been on the inside of the hoof I would have thought he'd just steped on himself which he often does but as it's on the outside I'm puzzled x

I would get your farrier to look at it ASAP.

Yes, get the farrier in quick and insist he does something rather than wait and see. I had to have a horse put down in May as the farrier just let a crack go on until it went through the cornet band. We spend 12 months with bar shoes and a plate on the wall but the crack would not grow out. The horse was lame for the whole 12 months and in the end the vet said it was never going to get better.
Having said that most cracks do grow out fine if they start at the bottom of the hoof and don't get all the way to the top. But you can't just ignore them.

Hi thanks, have told my farrier and hopefully he can get to us (snow ). I just found it odd to always have such good feet to then get a huge split like that over night with no lameness

Yehh that is strange! My ypungster had a crack that was caused by a tiny piece of gravel and he had excellent feet but with all this snow it is a bit of a mystery how thats happened! Called my farrier out straight away, cut a groove into his hoof and just had to clean and treat it every day for month then grew out! Turned out it was a seedy toe. Hope you get the farrier out soon with all this horrid weather!!
