I would have vet out in any case, but in the south east there have been loads of fresh strangles cases. Apparently one yard has not even had anything off the premises and still have it. So right now I think extra care needs to be taken.

I'm not suggesting you don't get the vet out, but sometimes you do just need to let viruses run their course without antibiotics. Thankfully I have a vet who won't just hand them out (got another local vet who will) and only recommends them where there is an infection to treat.
We had a virus on a yard 2 years ago and took ages to clear. I had a blood count done on one of mine but she had a normal blood count so vet told us just to let it run its course.

It is usual for a youngster to pick up bugs at about this age, as they no longer have the protection of their mothers milk. I find most bugs clear by 10 days if they go on longer they need the vet. I had a filly who developed sinusitis after being injected with antibiotics for a flu bug. This took ages to get rid of.

There are now two more yards in south east with strangles and of course youngsters are very prone. Personally I would want him swabbed to find out what bugs he has so he can be treated appropriately.
My vet prefers to see coughs and snots sooner rather than later as he says that if they need antibiotics they should have them quickly to prevent any permanent lung disorders or sensitivities.
In any case, it will put your own mind at rest.
