Does anybody have a problem gettin decent jockeys? I know the majority of you are into m&ms but some of you do plaited as well. We have been trying for months to find a decent show pony jockey but can't find one anywhere. It is not that it is not a decent pony either, its been champion on numerous occasions as a youngster and it is its first season out under saddle, but we just seem unable to find a jockey, unlesss you want one whose 8 riding riding school ponies
. I can't help thinking that if these show pony/show hunter pony classes were open to all ages like the NPS have done with their chamiponship class and is done in Australia then it could only be beneifical for the showing world. I'm quite sure it could easily be regulated sothat people are sent out of the ring if they are to big for the pony.
Just wondered others opinion on the situation and whether i'm the only one struggling? Any advise on where to find one would be great please as time is running out quick!! If any of you have a 138cm jockey lurking anywhere looking for a ride this season then let me know!!

I agree its really hard to get young, small and able enough jockeys we have m and m's but i can see the problem we used to have show ponies.
I think a good solution would be to keep the age and height classes for show ponies and show hunters and then have an open class open to all ages of riders for each height of pony if that makes sense?? so atleast the children are still not competeing against adults but yet the ponies that dont have young enough but small riders have still got a job!!
Maybe there could be a weight restriction on the heights though eg.
12h - 6stone 13h - 8stone 14h - 10stone etc just an example.
so there is guidlines.

I think we'd end up with anorexic jockeys Seriously though I would have loved to ride for someone if I was younger. But when I was younger I didn't know showing existed

Yes, no decent jockeys around for the most of us, the pro's get all the competent ones and the rest of us are left with the worse than hopeless with mothers with stars in their eyes. I gave up trying to find them 3 years ago. Both my mares are now producing quality stock that I will sell for someone else to produce and I will have to settle for watching someone elses competent kid doing the job instead. Such is life, I never wanted kids, and now its come back to haunt me!!

I've had this problem - I've got an 11.2 section A bought originally to do l/r but couldn't find a child who could ride! kept being offered children who would smile! But at easter got a really tiny 14 yr old who's amazing - the pair just get better & better - so any body in the Dorset area looking I'm happy to share her JJ

Where abouts are you? (Original poster), also whats the age limit for 138cm? Not to have attained the 15th birthday before the 1st of january in the current year. *Think that is correct* Also where about's are you? My sister rides for a few people, has ridden at all the major shows, ridden at HOYS & RIHS, good little rider and has one more year left in 13.2's.x

My daughter isnt a bad jockey, she weighs just 4 1/2stone, is about 4ft 2" (appalling I dont know her true height isnt it??) She has ridden some appalling ponies (all bought by me) - we are near Malvern if anybody is interested - she is 11yrs old (12 in October). Can offer some references too. She's quite pretty too!

My daughter is quite a gutsey rider, and is desperate to ride other ponies. She is 13 about 5 foot 1" and weights about 7 stone. She rides a 12.2h Section B at the moment. and had done all the hoys classes etc. We are based in south yorkshire if anyone has anything suitable

God i wld love them to take the ages away!! I have even thought about going to australia to show ponies for this reason! I was always really lucky as being short i have always got my last year in classes! I have been out of pony classes for i think 6 years now and people still ask me when i am riding a sp in why i dont ride it in the ring! Although being small is great for the little ponies i do think it puts me at a slight disadvantage moving onto big horses so it wld be great if they took the ages away so i cld stay on the little ones! but hey you cant have it both ways. I am lucky as i ride the m&ms and get away with the small ones but we have struggled finding small fr jockeys. The trouble often is that many of the jockeys are really busy with lots of rides but there must be jockeys out there who want to do it and maybe just need a little time and investment?? At the age of 24 i am still always 'keen' to get rides of people. When i was young we could only ever afford one pony and the only way to begin to realise my dream of showing at top level was to ride for other people. I remember the real excitement and buzz when people asked if i wld come and try a pony for them! I always had my own little m&m/shp to begin with but was lucky enough to get sp rides with wonderful people like Julie Farrell/Team Jago/Bonds etc and they taught me so much. I was also very lucky to have a mum who didnt mind driving me an 1hr to go and practice of pick me up at ridiculous hours! They were some of the best times of my life riding for people and i came away with a few good stories to! In my opinion riding for other people can only help your riding! Surely there must be some little m&m kids that want to ride SP's and vice versa, maybe we need a swap shop! ;-)

From the other side of the coin it has been a privilege having so many fantastic jockey's riding over the years, it has always been tremendous fun and I have been so lucky that these young people have given their time, and their parents have given their support to enable us all to enjoy this hobby. It has been good to see some of these riders competing with such success as adults and yes, there have been some good stories!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe admin it would be a good idea to have a thread where riders could say if they are looking for rides... They could give age, height, & weight and the area in which they are based and what shows they are at just in case someone wants a one off jockey for a class not forgetting email addy i know loads of people that are always looking for someone to ride various ponies at shows

I am always on the look out for rides, I have a 14.2 SP but am available for anything but the 148 opens, so M&M, shp, nov 148 etc.
I am 15, 5 foot 3, 7 stone 5, qualified my pony for SFAS last year (but was unable to go). Am a gutsy rider, get on anything but people always compliment on how quiet I sit and dont mess around with them.

Julie - if you will pm me, with a telephone number, I have a top class ridden sec A, well schooled and with lovely manners who is just too big moving for her seven year old rider this year. I live near you and would be very grateful to find a good small jockey for her.
