Having been told by close friends last weekend at Windsor that I was now almost eligible for Size Zero classification......and on relection that my show diet of cigarettes, full fat lattes, cheese & onion crips, chocolate, chips (with various dips) and cheeseburgers, does not necesarrily consitute a healthy balanced diet.....I thought it might be fun to ask people for thier ideas on gourmet lorry tucker......... Last year at PUK Champs I was lucky enough to be invited out for supper most evenings.....and have to say that I was thoroughly impressed by the variety of food I had to eat....everything from chicken and avocado salad to prime rib with jacket potatoes...... However, would like your suggestions on the following:- 1) Single show day tucker.....N>B: Has to be easy to prepare and easy to get hold of without having to trek 100 miles to the nearest M&S food hall. 2) Championship week, gourmet menu to impress, friends, family and anyone that you might happen to have an "eye" on for a candlelight supper.......

Perhaps there is business opportunity here.........??
Heard that you & Ponygirl enjoyed the lasagne i sent to BSPS, perhaps i should go into business, good old home cooking packages for shows. Delivered to the showground so completely hassle free.
Beef Bourginion with bread & butter pudding.... Pork with red wine & prunes followed by homemade yoghurt... Shepherds pie & victoria sponge with double cream & Jam....
No i haven't joined the WI yet, just to much time on my hands & a full freezer.
Anybody interested?

About 9 months ago I had a similar idea - was going to call it ShowHampers. What you could do was order a full cool box in three different price brackets, everything from salt and pepper to cutlery woould be there, it would be ready for you to collect morning of show - all you had to do was return coolbox at end of day...but couldnt think how to put it into practice, especially given that the big shows often have catering contracts in place....we thought of good bread, homemade soups, shepherd's/fish/steak and ale pies....and I am sure there is a market out there for good quality hassle free food that doesnt reek of old chip fat!

I recommend;
Home made quiche (tastes far better than even M&S and takes little time to make/cook). Can be served hot or cold, with salad or new pots.
Home made cakes; Cherry and coconut was last weeks show cake.

I didn't realise that when i married my husband i also took on the role of cook........ We run a commercial shoot so i have to come up with different menu ideas all winter & then cook said menu for 15 hungry men...... God bless my Aga Please would anybody who is genuinely interested PM me with your email address. I can then let you have some details of how it works & prices. The aim being to keep things simple, wholesome, easy & competitive with the price of a burger. I only use meat from a local butcher & quality ingredients. If you aren't a member then please email me at allypig@btinternet.com.

This could be a new class developing - best lorry prepared meal!!! We could sub divide it into sections according to budget/time of day etc. Marks could be given for such things as suitability (according to weather/time of year), taste, presentation etc. The manners marks would be assessed by watching the family eat - thats us lot down the line then!!!
There could also be a separate class for totally "home produced" fayre. Hey, we could soon be too busy to actually take the ponies (who, lets face it, can often spoil a good day out!!).

Enthusiast, is this a serious buisness idea? I personaly hate getting food out at shows, its always the same, burger and chips.........and I presume most people are the same, up at the crack of dawn, to nervous to eat, then after the class (and you won and been champion ) you the realise you are absoutly starving!!!!!! walk past the burger van and pig out! We do try to bring healthy easy food with us, and if we have planned to meet up with friends we quite often 'do lunch'. It would be nice to have some proper food at a show.

Enthusiast....~I think you have also forgotten Naughty Pudding....but I do hold the royalties on that one...so will expect my quarterly cheque.....lol
It is definately a great idea.....especially if you leave early in the morning and end up home late....I always remember to take dinner for the ponies, and extra haylage and water.....but often forget myself and my jockey...it has been known for me to be filling small water bottles from the equine water carrier to take into the ring....doh!!!!!!!!

Enthusiast , I am asuming that your premises are registered with your local council and have been checked by their enviromental health department and that you hold at least the basic food hygiene certificate. If not please be careful about providing food for the paying public or you may find yourself in hot water. I am not trying to be difficult and I am sure that you are aware of the laws but if you need any help let me know and i can advise you. It was my job for ten years before children came along!! Great idea though.

Great idea though. Thank you cake for your post. You will see from my earlier post that i already cook on a commercial basis & am well aware of the laws which i must adhere to. Should i decide to take this idea forward, & judging by the emails & PM's, there is certainly alot of interest. All food would be prepared in a commercial, council registered & inspected kitchen which i am fortunate to have access to, by qualified people.

Funny you should mention Business opportunities...
On 8th June I'm launching Morwenna Catering. A mobile food stand aimed at the healthier market and aiming to provide a wide variety or foods from hot jacket pots and pastas, to cold pasta salads, wraps, quiche. We are also going to aim at providing a good selection of vegetarian food and snacks. No Burgers, No chips.
My main aim will be to run along side burger vans at horse shows and other events, so that people have a choice and those that want burgers can, and those that don't can have something else.
I've been working hard on this for quite some time refurbishing my van, and getting the relevant paperwork done, and in 3 weeks we're ready to roll....
Wish me luck.

I think an alternative to burgers n chips, sausage n chips, fish n chips curry sauce n chips, fried chicken n chips......n more chips! wil go down an absoutle treat.
I would be happy with a stand that can just offer a sandwich!! Its about time some of these events offer a healtheir choice, and good luck to anyone who stars doing this, im sure is will go down great guns!
