Hi, just wondering if anyone has experienced this? I brought my yearling colt in from the field tonight and discovered several large lumps on the inside of his canon bones. They're not painful to touch, resemble splints but he has not gone lame. I didn't think splints really affected ponies this young? I know the ground is hard at the mo, but even so? I've trawled through the Internet and now I'm convinced hes got some sort of growth abnormality! Hes been rather immature since hes been born and always had daily turnout and hard feed. He has grown rather a lot since Christmas, maybe this has something to do with it? I would be very interested to know if anyone else has experienced this.

as a breeder i cant say ive noticed it in any of our youngstock if you are sure its not a splint then call the vet, if its boney growths (usually started with incorrect diet) with treatment they can be sorted my friends horse is 3 and has got a splint no helped by her breaking it in and riding it, before she brought it all it had done was stand in a stable so legs really werent up to do ridden work yet.

Youngstock can get splints just by playing out in the field when the ground is very hard.

My yearling got multiple splits a few years ago just with it being hard ground and him running about alot. they did go down though
