Maybe this is a good case for a marking system for these classes, I was always led to believe that a hack should be of true hack quality with correct conformation, move long and low, be light in the hand, have elegance and manners. Now, if we had a horse with all these qualities we would indeed be a lucky bunny- so, what takes precedence in these classes? Type, conformation, ride? If there were a mark system then we would all know and be judged according to the rules. It is frustrating to be left down the line below badly performing horses, however, at what stage do we concede type for performance? Sorry for the waffle, but would be interested to hear other opinions on this subject.

hacks are a strange one! i think a marking system should be brought in as you do a individual show and judge ride, obviously a hack should be typy but manners are vital,in my opinion the judge on monday did ride lovely which i did say but,she went for the typy-not the manners, individual show, the ride. now why bother with a individual show and judge ride,if the class is going to be only looked at as type. ide much pefer to see a nice elegant hack (not a true hack as there not many!) peform a spotless show,go nicely for the judge and have manners win a class than a bad mannerd, flashy mover, typy hack. how can a judge put a horse that bucks with her up into the placeings above well mannerd horses? ??

If a horse has a curb, for example, it is not obvious from the ring side, however I can't think of any judge that will place a horse with a curb no matter how good it is. So - although manners are important, conformation has to be taken into account. However, I wasn't there, so can't comment!

Can anyone tell me who it was that won and was second in the novice riding horse? I was 3rd (out of three!) but really pleased as first affiliated class with my mare (only been broken just over a year) and I have never done a horse class before. Judge was very nice and told me I would do very well with her and that she gave a good ride just needs more condition which I already knew Just intrested to know who I was in the ring with. Both the others was really nice horses and although both had a hiccup in the class I can understand why there were above me however if someone could either on here or PM me and explain how a riding horse class is judge I would appreciate it as I don't really understand

I could be totally wrong here, but if its the class that was going while i was at the workers ring, then it was a chestnut. But like i say...it could have been a totally different class!!! :/

It was a bay horse very nice sort, compact and true hunter in my opinion. However Banjo was only 6th and went and looked outstanding.
