Does anyone have a horse with a bog spavin? Are you still able show your horse, if so at what level? How do you treat a bog spavin? Would you buy a horse knowing it had one? Sorry - Lots of questions but know nothing about them? Thank you.

Lots of horses and ponies are shown at county/affilliated level with varying degrees of these. Some are huge, some are small. It can be improved by figure of 8 bandaging on the hock but needs to be done carefully or more problems can arise. It's not the worst blemish and whilst unnattractive can be forgiven. However you need to look at the whole picture as the judge will take all conformation elements into account

I had a pony with them, they were picked up on the vetting but she passed the spavin test, whilst she wasn't a show animal, she hacked, schooled and jumped with them and was never unsound in the three years I had her. So soundness wise they were never an issue.

Years ago I had a t.b yearling that developed one whilst turned out in the field. It was huge and on the inside of the bend of the hock. My vet told me to use b.r. radiol linament and I rubbed this in until it became scabby and crusty, the pressure got rid of the bog spavin and she went on to be a champion riding horse. I think the figure of 8 bandage might have the same effect. Or those elasticated stretch bandage socks that pull on. Any form of pressure helps to get the fluid down. Tensolvet is supposed to be good.

Saz imagine a figure of 8 going around the bend of the hock. The x part needs to go over the spavin, the top loop over the back of the hock above the joint and the bottom loop below the joint of the hock. The point of hock has no bandage on it. In the old days Bone Radiol used to have a bit of blister agent in it but I think it is much milder these days so it might not go as scabby as Gadabout says. Any massage over the spavin is good though as you are looking to disperse the bursal fluid that has accumulated.

Not having much joy keeping the figure 8 bandages on my boy! How tight can I go, should I put something underneath for protection from bandage lines? Should I try the DMSO mid season or will all the hair fall out and leave a bad looking area? Thanks
