Having a problem with new pony, she is very dry mouthed, teeth are ok checked and rasped recently, have tried giving her a jam coated jangly bit, sweet iron bit, breaking bit etc etc When ridden she just won't give or yield an inch, she just pokes and mouth very still, not exactly fixed or rigid but just as if the bit isn't there. Doesn't like treats or sweets so a coated bit doesn't seem to be much help. Any ideas, I'm stumped

Having thought about this a bit, I'm not sure it's related to the bit at all, but perhaps a schooling issue. I think the horse has to be very relaxed through its jaw in order to salivate, which presuming that back/teeth/etc have been checked and all ok, then I think the horse needs to be relaxed through its back, and particularly the poll, and the relaxation of the jaw and acceptance of the bit would come last? Does that make any sense or am I talking complete drivel??
Edited to add, that IMO, using a bit made from some material which would artificially encourage the salivation, is solving the immediate problem but not necessarily the root cause behind it?
I'm sure there must be some knowledgeable person out there who could explain what I'm trying to say better than I can say it!!

Yes back etc all ok have tried the thing mentioned on the Fylde website, tying curb chains together and covering them in honey and letting them suck and chomp on that for a while, she just stands there with it all running out of the corners of her mouth Any of my others would be going mad for a mouth full of jam or honey, she barely registers its there

I would try grazing her in-hand in her bit. I am sure some nice grass would help her accept the bit in her mouth better. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thats a good idea, I did try shoving some grass in one day working on the same idea, but she just let it fall out but if she picks it up of her own accord then I suppose she will be more inclined to chomp, I'll give it a try. Never had one like her, the other 4 drive me mad with their over exhuberent slobbering
