I haven't used side reins before, but I have lunged ponies many times. Any hints or cautions about using them? At shows, i see many ponies lunging steadily with their side reins on. Also, do people use side reind when long reining?

I use side reins whilst lunging only on the loose side, not so they have their heads stuck in their chest, although i dont lunge very often. I dont tend to use them whilst long reining my young horse at the moment. Im not a big fan of gadgets but i am going to invest in a Pessoa at some point as i think they are fab for getting them to work through their backsi

hi.. i think side reins have had there day, as there are so many other good gadgets on the market ( i am not a gadget fan)like the pessoa and chambon. imo.. i just think they set there head to much and dont allow a stretch. x

I much prefer a pessoa, they gave the horse room to strech and does not fix the horses head in one position. But they need to be fittied correctly x

Side reins and correct lunging can totally reshape and retrain your pony both mentally and physically either for the better or worse. Therefore, as much, if not more attention should be given to being trained yourself how to use them properly. I lunge a lot, with sidereins, in the winter but rarely in the summer when I can hack.
Without side reins or some other aide, you can exercise on the lunge but schooling is pretty impossible.
Therefore, I would invest in some lunging lessons from a professional, you will be surprised what you can do and what you can learn.

I prefer a passoa to side reins, but I do use both.
Make sure they are fitted loosely and then just shorted a little bit, once the horse has warmed up.
Side reins with elastic should be used, not fixed ones.

Yes and when buying, go for the ones with the eyelet holes, not just the ones you pull through buckles and guess the length. It is pretty impossible to make sure they are both identical lengths whereas you can count the eye holes.

As usual, I'm with S&O! I used to school a lot on the lunge with side reins, and later a bungy, as I lunged better than I rode - but I did meet someone once who said lunging was boring, and she used to make all her phonecalls while lunging her horse. I can't believe the horse was much better for her lunging!

Im a little old fashioned and am a big fan of side reins when used correctly! I like to think that with side reins, when the pony gives to the pressure, the pressure is relieved therefore teaching them to resepct the hand and carry themselves correctly and balanced, I can see how this would work with a Pessoa? As it works on a pully system I cant understand how there can be any 'give' However each to their own on this one, its a real big can of worms!! There are many gadgets which I strongly disagree with - however this is my own personal preference as side reins worked a treat on my horse - I know many people who disagree with these! I think you need to try things and go with your gut instinct and see what works best for you! I have sinced found that getting on and schooling gave me the best result however I know this isnt always an option. 100% agree with the above though and the ones with eyelet holes are the best option - however im not a fan of elasticated side reins as this taught my horse to pull, but again thats to preference! Give them a try and see how you get on! Happy lunging!

Love long reining, think it is fantastic for horses to learn to work from behind and get out and about. I dislike side reins and lunging with a passion, so I never do it and don't intend to ever do it. But each to their own
