Hi Puddledub, you are just the lady to run a winter NORTHERN champs at one of your fantastic Scottish venues and Im sure I speak for most of the replies on here that we would support you! We too were going to have a show with PUK quals but wont now bother as no one from here would be interested in going all that way. Unnaffiliated fun day here we come!!!

Unfortunately this is another example of PUK having no consideration for it's membership and will probably be another nail in it's coffin. There are only so many slaps in the face competitors will take before they vote with their feet and now PUK don't have a monopoly on championship shows they will slide at ever increasing speed down the slippery slope with only "themselves" to blame.

I like the idea of one Winter Championships again but CENTRAL it certainly isnt! I wont be travelling for four hours at the beginning of March and think this will be the end of my PUK membership

Without doubt Addington is a super venue, just got back from BSHA champs and it is wonderful, but do feel for the northerners as it is a long drive. Further for us though than Towerlands! Guess it is great for Midlands folk! My concern is how early it is, we had hoped to put qualifiers on at our BSPS Winter show but won't be able to do so now and also with babies coming out next season the chance to qualify before will be slim if you don't start showing them until Feb. Shame as like the winter champs.

We would have travelled had it been CENTRAL but its just to far for most of us northerners and so early on, thinks Ponies Uk might have done them selfs some serious damage with this.

I wonder why there is only one champs? It seemed easier to have two as it kept everyone happy. GOOD QUESTION NITELIFE BOARD. PERHAPS IT SHOULD NOW BE MADE OFFICIAL THAT PONIES (uk) NO LONGER EXIST AND HAS BECOME PONIES (SOUTHERN) . UNLESS I'M MUCH MISTAKEN UK IS ALL OF BRITISH ISLES. A NAME CHANGE IS IN ORDER METHINKS!! WHAT SAY YOU??

Yet again a society has pretty much totally disregarded Scottish and Northern competitors!! I will most certainly not be including P(UK) Winter qualifiers at my 4 winter shows this year then - as I cannot see that any Scottish competitor is going to be interested in going to the winter champs MAKE THAT MOST NORTHERNERS PUDDLEDUB!!!!!!!!!!!

is there no way we could all get together and have our own winter champs in the North? Or would some enterprising Equestrian centre not like to jump in and organise something? There is no way I would consider travelling to Addington and yet again we in the North are going to miss out. Nof E and Elite were both Northern and now at Arena UK, NCPA now at Uttoxeter. We are so short of good shows now. I know Southview wasnt perfect but PUK couldnt complain about the entries they got when it was there or Myerscough!

I quite agree heath, and really do wonder if the "powers (or Power) that be know exactly what they are doing here. As you say entries for the Northern winter champs were still good in spite of high entry fees and their cutting the number of classes compared to the Southern show. The summer Champs were very lackluster and again classes had been cut. This has all been well documented on here and other sites so the organisers cannot be unaware of the way people are feeling. Yet still they cut down to one winter championship and arrange it so early in the year it is quite possible, especially if we have another bad winter, that quite a high proportion of the few that manage to qualify will be unable to attend due to snow. And of course entry fees already paid are not refundable. I think the society has just lost interested and would be happy to cut down to being an ellitest little club based down South. And while we are well covered with other Championship shows for the summer will really miss not having a winter one. We would love to attend anything any members could suggest, we could travel up to four hours north just as easily as we could go south, tho a little later than early March as we couldnt even get our wagon out then last year.! Look forward to hearing if someone has "an inspiration"

Perhaps if you could suggest a venue in the North with the infrastructure that would support the holding of a major championship show ponies uk may look at it for the next time a new venue is required.
Oh!! sorry the lady one a few of you care to be rude about was in the NORTH looking at venues that most of you have never heard of to satisfy the wingers.
AS I understand it it was the committeee members of the Northern and Winter Management Committees that decided that the two should come together and they are the ordinary members.
Perhaps some should raise there standards and look beyond the end of there noses.

Hi, The one that readily springs to mind is Ingliston which is superb, probably one of the best in the country with permanent stables, restaurant, showers, hard standing, indoor school etc. As good if not better than Towerlands.

Further reply to heath
Whilst you are suggesting Ingleston as a venue the distance to there from south of Preston is 220 miles Addington Manor is 180 miles.
So would you rather travel south on m6 roads or north over Shap and over the M74 on Beatock in March

Yes but not everyone would be travelling from South of Preston. For those that are perhaps Addington would be a better bet. All Im saying is that for us and a lot of Northerners it would be less than half the journey, Some a lot less. I have put it into the computer to find out and that is fact. Please dont think I am having a go at PUK because I love the Summer Champs and BEP but I dont think they realise that we cant always afford to travel these great distances and it was great having a Northern Winter Champs. Also for so many of us Northerners the first weekend in March would be totally unrealistic as we can still be snowed up then and the ponies had no or very little work by then. This happened last year and we had 6-8 weeks when we couldnt do a thing consuquently we were so far behind the Southerners that it would have been a waste of money to have gone at that time anyway. I think PUK is a very good organisation and have tried hard and it has been appreciated to have had a Northern Winter Champs. Just so sad we have lost it! PS We wouldnt have to travel over Shap to get to Ingliston, we do that to get to Southview!

Well done Edwin. I'm not a P (UK) member but this seems a very reasonable explanation.

Such as shame !!!
Thats my decision made, equifest for us next year, It seems pointless even renewing my membership just for the one show !!! £65 senior member, £18 for junior and 4 ponies.
Enough said, though I am genuinly gutted as I have supported puk for years and enjoyed everytime I have been but just cant see the 'value ' for money paying out all that membership for just one show.

Well I was selfishly very pleased to hear that the PUK winter champs would be at Addington because its less than 50 miles from me. I thought I might perhaps give PUK another chance so I went on to their website to look for qualifiers. At the moment there is not one qualifier within 100 miles of here - they all seem to be North or East!! Does that make sense?

as a northerner I echo the above, PUK is expensive, addington is too far not only for costs but the unpredictable bad weather we have! I will be rejoining NCPA and attending equifest, I think someone needs to warn the equifest committee we 'have seen the llight'! they may need more classes, stabling etc!!! I think the NCPA, should hold a winter champs, somewhere up north like myerscough or southview (agree utoxxeter is too far), i'm sure they would have enough members wishing to do some winter shows!

We live in Cornwall so it's not easy for us either but where ever they choose to hold the champs is going to upset someone. Entries did look low at both winter champs this year which obviously they considered. My concern is finding qualifiers in the south west but if we do we shall more than likely attend the champs.

I was very happy with a northern and southern show as it helped us all with our diesel costs. Wish we could go back to that format!

Agree puddledub - we held winter qualifiers at our show in August - a whole ring full of them - won't bother again though - or Royal London - they agreed the qualifiers & never sent the cards

for us the change of venue to addington is great (only 30 minutes away) however there is only 1 qualifier within a 1.5/2 hour radius, think if P(uk) are going to hold the champs down here then more qualifiers are needed, however will be joining again this year to do the young rider qualifiers

guess PUK is happy just to have business from the south which leaves a big gap in the north which has now been filled by Betsy Branyan and Festival Equestrian Events Winter Champs end of March 2011 and it is a proper Championship show where most classes require that you have qualified for bsps, puk, ncpa, equifest since September 2010 or you can qualify for the FEE winter champs at any of the Barton winter shows and other shows which affiliate AND there is no huge membership/pony registration fee to pay with FEE NCPA are also holding an open northern winter show in March with no qualification needed Well done Festival Equestrian and NCPA and to all winter competitors, please take advantage of what is being made available in the north Good luck to everyone
