Thanks for that Tinker. A sobering story but really useful information to know, I have learnt something today.

112 is the European Emergency Services Number which will automatically divert to 999 in the UK (so you may as well dial 999 in the first place).
The non-emergency number for the police is 101 but I am not sure that it is available throughout the UK at the moment. It is also referred to as SNEN (Single Non Emergency Number). They started trialing it in Hampshire, Sheffield, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, Leicester City and Rutland.
It is intended that it goes UK wide in 2008 but not sure when.
If in an emergency, call 999 in the UK or 112 in Europe.

Meant to add that there is apparently an email circulating at the moment which talks about a "true" story using the 112 number. I suspect that this may be the one.
Nothing wrong in being careful though.

Well having just started driving about on my own I found it useful to learn that I don't need to stop for an unmarked car. The flashing light may have made it convincing, and if someone driving appeared to be in uniform, some people might be persuaded to stop. Sensible to drive to a well-lit busy area, such as a garage forecourt to be safe. Have to say also, I will now keep my mobile where I can reach it quickly when travelling alone at night. It would usually be in the bottom of my handbag in its case, not easily to hand in an emergency. (and before you tell me, I know I can't phone while I'm driving!!!)
