Opinions please!
Do you think it would be acceptable to show a pony in a pelham without the curb chain or the hooks. So it was more like a snaffle for him but had a more professional look for open classes with the double reins? He would be doing Olympia/HOYS level.
This pony goes well in his snaffle and in his pelham with the same mouthpiece but without the chain, but even with a loose elastic curb chain he seems to know and doesn't go as well!
Do you think judges would find it acceptable or even notice?

We have shown ponies before without a curb chain and never had a problem with it, i certainly wldnt mark one down if it didnt have one as long as th epony is going correctly.

I think a curb chain should be used with a lip strap as its correct. You can get leather curb chains as well as elasticated.

I agree with Doldy, that you should use 'correct' tack. If pony goes well in the snaffle, why don't you use this for Open classes? I don't think that it looks professional to leave bits off. If I was judging the class, I would think that the exhibitor didn't know what they were doing. That sounds very harsh - sorry!

I personally would not like to see a pelham or weymouth without either curb or lipstrap. I always use a leather curb and fitted correctly, with a slightly lighter contact on the curb rein should not cause any problem with a pony or horse educated sufficiently to be wearing such a bit.

'Horses for Courses', if your pony doesn't like a curb chain- leave it off! We have come across some bizarre equine likes and dislikes over the years and found it best to accomodate them, after all a happy way of going is the most important thing. There was a pony in the plaited class at HOYS last year with no curb chain, presumably he went best without one- didn't stop him getting placed either!
Never use a lip strap either, personally feel they clutter up the jaw on a refined pony head- just my personal foible!
