Does anyone know the law for provision of first aid at local shows? I was spectating at a local show today when there was a nasty accident when a riders horse reared up and went over backwards falling on her knocking her out. Where were the first aiders? None present!! Thankfully another spectator went to her aid who was luckily a doctor,it took a fair while for the paramedics to arrive and then an ambulance. The lady by this time thankfully had regained conciousness and was taken to hospital. My daughter last year had a bad fall at a show at Tickhill arena, where again there was no provision made regards First Aid, The organisers seemed more bothered about taking entries that assisting us with our daughter ,but eventually said they could phone for the ambulance! I do understand that we ride and compete at our own risk but i do feel strongly that First Aid provision should be made law at every level of competition as lives could be put in grave danger without it. What does everyone think??

We have St Johns, Booked well in advance, Were fantastic last year with a suspected heart attack, twisted ankle and cut hand !! My mother in law is also a qualified first aider, we also have a vet and let the local police know we have an event, and the emergency ambulance knew exactly where to find us, we also had emergency provisions to move all equines to other end of field and had floresent sheet in case of a helicopter being required.

We have St Johns, Booked well in advance We did this last year at a local show we run (booked with confirmation), and St Johns cancelled 2 days before the event, leaving us no time to rebook anyone else despite them admiting they'd known for a while that they wouldn't be able to cover us. We're trying Red Cross this year, so hopefully they'll be more reliable. Luckily we had 2 qualified first aiders on site with equipment, and no accidents!

Oh dear oh dear - maybe show organisers who don't have first aid cover should read either their licence or insurance. My partner runs his own PRIVATE AMBULANCE COMPANY and specialises in Equestrian, Motor X and quad events.
He can provide anything you require from a doctor to a first aider. He will carry out a risk assessment from information you provide and will advise on requirements should you be unsure. He has his own fleet of full ambulances, 4X4 Ambulances, ambulance cars and an ambulance quad!!!!!!!
If you require further information feel free to email me on kilattle@hotmail.co.uk Please remember to include contact details.
THEY COVER ALL OVER THE UK.

Ridgeway Show ran RIHS worker qualifiers without any first aid yesterday or a Course Builer!! - suprised the Judges did not refuse to judge??
What would have happened if there was an accident?? - could the judges have been sued for proceeding without FA cover!!
Hate to think!!

FA - The sad world we live in now could easily have left certainly the show organiser open to being sued had there been an accident. It is unfortunate that show organisers feel they should not have to pay for first aid cover and many see that they are paying people to do nothing. I have to say that if your first aid company are doing nothing at your show then that is only a good sign!!!! Competitors are willing to pay a couple of pounds on top of their entry for first aid provisions as god forbid, they may need them. I am sure the gentleman who was crushed by his bull on Saturday was glad that Procare were there - I know all the farmers who came over afterwards to thank them were!!!!!!

There is no requirement to have anything but first aiders at shows on most insurance policies.

As an exhibitor I would gladly pay the extra for FA cover - I do understand that insurance cover does not ask for you to provide anything above an appointed First Aiders - this frightens me!
Perhaps if there is no visible St Johns etc on site then the appointed First Aiders certifcate should be present at the secretaries for us to see!! - horses come up as the same level of insurance as Formula 1!!
Having said that I feel the £10 PUK are charging a little extreme, HOWEVER I know they use one of the best in the Country so I am going to pay - I should think they charge a fair few thousand to cover that show for the week!!

I too agree that FA should be there and am also happy to pay for it, I have seen the PUK price this year and we no longer go to PUK but 2 yrs ago my eldest was poorly on our last day at PUK and happened to keel over near the FA headquarters!!! In there was a Doctor and a nurse besides all the paramedics dotted round the showground, I for one was impressed and they were excellent. Sometimes you get what you pay for.
