All my show plans are out the window! My yearling has developed two splints from the hard ground. Just thought it might be worth asking all the knowledable people on the this web site what works to speed recovery. Any advise would be much appreciated. :)ah

Fylde saddlery think about 25 a bottle dont normally use more than one bottle!! very good!!!! gold for new splints but requires bandaging which im not keen on so i go for silver which does not require bandaging prob take little longer than gold but used correctly seems to help them on there way faster!!!! use with care strong stuff! but works!!!!!!!

Baby splints..... Leave them alone they will go . Sometimes applications at such a young age can do more harm than good.

I was always under them impression that if a splint was settled there was nothing you could do about it.
Things like magnetic boots, laser treatments, DSMo etc all work on new active ones?
I do know of people who have had surgery on splints, to remove them, both cases were successful, I was wondering of anyone else has had experiece with this? and would you consider this route?

I've heard that hydrotherapy can help with splints.
I think there is a difference between a mature pony developing splints and a youngster. Youngsters bones are usually still fairly soft and splints often disappear over time. I had a yearling who developed one and she's 3 now and there's no sign of it. I didn't put anything on it.

I am currently treating what has been a large splint on a hind leg. This was caused by a knock. The horse is 8 years old and has not been lame. Within a week of this forming I used bute to reduce swelling. Since then he has had a weekly visit from our equine physio and had laser treatment. A smaller laser was left with me and we have done 2 sessions each day. Bioflow magnetic wraps have been used overnight. This splint is now hardly visible. The horse has had 4 weeks off, but has had his usual daily turnout (well booted!!) and is now back in normal work. Hopefully, this week will be his last laser session. Sadly this leaves him only one RI qualifier.....but should have no soundness issues in later life from this splint.

I know someone who is desperate for a pair of bioflow boots for her old pony but cant seem to fine dcent ones. Thanks

I have the Bioflow tendon wraps. I usually use these overnight on our 35 year old pony...who (fingers crossed) shows little stiffness and still canters off with her friends each morning. I have found them so good that I have bought a second pair.
Bioflow do brushing boots and the wraps. The brushing boots would probably be better if you wanted to leave the boots on for turnout. I find the wraps very versatile and have used them for all sorts (eg windgalls, after excercise on hard ground, to prevent legs swelling when a horse has to be in for a few days, on a pony with mild arthritis etc). They only do small or large. I have the small size and these are fine on anything from 13 hands to 15 hands. The large size are quite big and probablly wouldn't fit a foreleg of anything under 15.2hh. I bought my first pair at the Royal International and the 2nd over the phone from Ecoflow (who make the Bioflow products) but there are plenty of distributors. I think they cost around £58.00. Hope this helps!!

I do know of people who have had surgery on splints, to remove them, both cases were successful, I was wondering of anyone else has had experiece with this? and would you consider this route? We had one operated on by a very well respected surgeon, but it went wrong and it resulted in a disfigured (but totallly functioning) leg, plus and even bigger splint than we started with. It's major surgery and not something to take lightly. I wouldn't do it now, especially with all the new treatments on the market and it is afterall, only a blemish, and an operation is a lot for a horse to undergo for cosmetic reasons.

I was told that it was more difficult to do surgery if the splint was under the knee as opposed to further down the leg.

Re splints. Homeopathy cured a splint on a 8year old I consulted a homeopath and she gave medicines that sorted it out. I also had treated hard spots that appeared under the saddle area I also use boots for every time the horse is turned out and bioflow boots to help but they should only be used for 12hours and not for exercise.

Many thanks for all your views. I'm not really sure what to do now, as hes only a yearling I might just wait and see what happens. Hes only a very fine 12hh riding pony, so I don't think I'll get bioflow boots small enough to fit him. I might try to get some turnout boots for him though to provide a bit of support. Hes growing very quickly at the moment so it might be a temporary thing that he might grow out of!

Used this a few years ago with great sucess, but i cant remember the application routine? was it three days on then two days off?? I have tried splintex gold, while it has reduced it a bit i have not been happy with the overall effect. Used a whole bottle over a long period. (four months!!) Please can someone remind me of the dosage. Ta Ps its the Silver splintex you bandage with, not the gold.
