....is too small?? What is the lower height limit you would consider putting into a height divided showing class? For example, is a 118cm SHP too small for a 122cm class? Or a 124cm SP too small for a 128cm class?

I show a 117.5cm pony in SHP under 122cm with no problem, I don't think it matters if it goes well and the judge likes it.

Hmm, thanks for the replies, the reason I asked was that we have recently purchased a 118cm (LHC) SHP, he isn't a well known or successful pony but does very well at local level (rarely beaten even in open showing classes by adults on horses) qualifies for BSPS and PUK champs usually at first attempt , has had a few minor placings at the champs, and has had OK marks in RIHS qulaifiers. We recently tried a HOYS qualifier and the ride judge said he was too small Said he reminded them of a FR pony but his way of going is like an open pony He does look small compared to the others in his class but is in fact only just over an inch within the height limit. My jockey can still do the FR classes but he doesn't seem to do well in these classes and does better in the novice and open classes, but these comments have left me unsure of what to do with him. Not to worry, probably a case of the judge finding a polite way of saying she didn't like him very much

Keep trying one judges opinion is just that their opinion, we also do coloured classes and compete against 153cm and under and we still do well, a good judge can judge what they see in front of them regardless of size surely!!

we had a very succesful 133cm show pony, when we first brought him out many of our friends told us to sell him as they believed he was too small and would stand down the line to the big boys, but we persivered and stayed showing him a few judges turned round and said he was too small but that was very rare, he was a little pony but had big attitude and was a total show off, he excelled in the show ring and beat many of the bigger BIG ponies much of the time. from now on we dont often regard height as that important. if i was you, and you belive in him, and know he can do it, there is no problem with height.
after all many of the best things come in small packages! thats what we always say!
