Before you go to see this cart you need to measure your pony with his harness on, so you will have some good idear as to the fit of the pony in the shafts Stand the pony on flat ground and measure from the tug to the ground, so when you see the cart you can measure from the tug stop to the ground to see if it is about the same. Measure down the side of the pony were the shafts go as if from shaft tip to trace hook, then do the same on the shafts on the cart, then you will have some idear if it will fit the pony

Also the cart has got to "fit" you when you sit in the driving seat you must have enough leg room and a comfortable back rest .

Check if there is any way to balance the cart as it is no good if the balance is wrong.

The only way to see were the balance is on this cart is when you have your measurements ask the person selling the cart to sit in it with you holding the shafts now move the shafts slowly up and then down to find the point of balance which will be when the shafts become very light in your hands, then get someone to measure the tug stop on the shafts to the ground. Now you will know were the balance is for the person sitting in the cart, so now you must sit in the cart and see were the point of balance is for you.

The other measurement you should take from this cart is the inside of the shafts between the tug stops to see if the shafts are wide enough for your pony when he is standing between them, which you can measure again before you go and see the cart, across his back looking down from tug to tug over the saddle pad, as the shafts must not rub his sides. There are so many things to think about when doing a fitting between pony, harness, and carriage.

Also as you are new to driving, I should have also said when you check the balance with a person in the cart, you hold the shafts right at the ends on the tips, good luck and I hope you will enjoy your driving.
